Stonehenge mystery:'Superhenge' megaliths believed to be Neolithic ritual site - TomoNews

DURRINGTON WALLS, UNITED KINGDOM — In what may prove to be the largest Neolithic site ever discovered in Britain, and possibly in Europe, archeologists have found a row of 90 megaliths near Stonehenge.

The 4,500-year-old stones, which are up to 15 feet tall and five feet wide were found, thanks to the use of sophisticated ground-penetrating radar equipment, buried under a thick grassy bank. They were lying horizontally, three feet underground.

It is conceivable that they originally stood vertically in the ground, like other standing stones in Britain, and that the stone line marked a ritual procession route in a gigantic ceremonial complex.

Archaeologists believe the megaliths were ultimately deliberately pushed over and buried.

Durrington Walls, the site where the stones were found, is 12 times the area of Stonehenge and was arranged with the same summer solstice alignment, the Telegraph reported.

Another nearby wooden structure named Woodhenge was thought to represent the land of the living, while Stonehenge represented the realm of the dead.

The research on this new discovery, which opens a new chapter of the Stonehenge story, will be presented at the British Science Festival in Bradford this week.

Paul Garwood, an archaeologist and lead historian on the project at the University of Birmingham, was quoted by the Guardian as saying that the new discovery has changed fundamentally how researchers understand Stonehenge and the world around it.

"Everything written previously about the Stonehenge landscape and the ancient monuments within it will need to be rewritten," Garwood said.
