These massive spiders may not be native to North America, but they've recently found a new home in the New World. This large, long-legged creature is the Joro spider. They appeared in Georgia in 2014 and have begun to move up the east coast of the United States.

I had 3 of them in my backyard in Japan. Actually quite beautiful, really tough, could easily withstand very strong downpours, re-build their webs in minutes. Frightening at first, I got quite used to them and started to admire them up close - their color combination is truly amazing!

Just to clarify something. If a foreign species comes into a new environment and doesn't cause significant negative effects, it isn't classified as "Invasive". That term is only used to categorize the problematic species like feral hogs or cats.
This spider seems just to be a foreign or introduced species

This video is not very accurate, showing clips of Joros and Golden silk spiders which are not the same spider. They both spin golden silk and are indeed related but not the same species. The ones with almost completely yellow abdomens are the native species, also called banana spiders. The joros are striped on the abdomen, and are not native, but have recently moved in.

We've had them here in North Florida for the entire 56 years of my life. We used to hit their webs running through the woods when we were kids, and totally freak out!

It’s the Golden Orb Weaver, we have them in South Florida. Their webs glimmer gold in the sunlight.

I almost mistaken it for a golden orb weaver.

All spiders are venomous and these are harmless to humans. Their bite is unlikely to break the skin. Gorgeous, gentle creatures.

They were all over Florida when I was a kid. Almost ran right into a giant web on my bike one time🤣

I think you showed the golden orb weaver a few times

We call them banana spiders in Oklahoma.

Saw one today in central Missouri. Came across this video trying to figure out what it was.

People. These are not "banana" spiders or yellow garden spiders. They're closely related but are not the same. The joro just arrived in the US recently. You have not seen them your whole life in whatever US state.

If they are so venomous, why do they always show them handling them?

Oh hell no. We need to put a stop to this spider shit

See them here in Georgia handle them all the time completely harmless.

In either 2022 or 2023 I came out to my car in south jersey and one of these was just chilling on my mirror! I was terrified. Biggest spider I ever seen fml

This is a misleading title. These spiders are not medically significant to humans if bitten. Quite harmless, actually.

Unfortunately, they also eat beneficial pollinators like butterflies.
