I remember reading that towards the end of his life Herod worried that no one would mourn him when he died. So to remedy that he issued a decree that all of the most important and influential people in the kingdom were to be executed once he passed. Thankfully after he died his guards decided that they didn't have to listen to him anymore and they ignored the decree.

Actually, it’s likely it did happen- but for the amount of babies that were killed, it wasn’t in the hundreds or thousands of, so- unrecorded.
