Does UV Light Kill Bacteria In a Mushroom Humidifier?

preview_player
Показать описание
I have used a UV light to try and kill the bacteria buildup in my homemade mushroom humidifier. The results have been mixed. Almost all the bacteria or algae that the light reaches gets killed, but there are parts inside the tank that are shaded and still grow bacteria. This bacteria often washes out and dirties the water.

Is it worth doing? I says 60% yes, it does prevent bacteria that would otherwise be vaporized and spread around the grow room, and it does make the cleanup a lot easier. But you still need to give it a clean once a week to get the dead biomass out of it.

I use a UV-C lamp when I pour agar in my Petri dishes for my mycelium cultures. I let them harden and cool under the light, and then put the lids on when they’ve cooled down. This way I don’t get any contamination or condensation ☺️

I know this is an older video, but something to keep in mind is that UV light doesnt reflect like most other lights, and if you put a layer of aluminum foil on the bottom shiny side up it might help diffuse the light better.

About the gunk in your water- I’ve been using a small electric fish tank water filter which has worked well. Only about £20.

Glue aluminium foil on inside above waterline to bounce UV light for maximum coverage

You get bacterias when there is not enough oxygen in the water. As long as you break the surface, you'll get enough oxygen. Just add a small pump to it to have the water circulate, this is how I do it in my aeroponic systems and it works very well.

I know this video is from last year but I think you’d have way more success with a submersible UV sterilizer

In hydroponics I use hydrogen peroxide to control algae in my tubs. Wouldn’t it work in this case too? Love your sense of humor in this video 😂❤

It’s not the Crocs that makes one question the manhood of an individual…it’s the individual who wears straight up sandals with shorts, and then knee high socks…

Man card revoked at that point 😂

UV actually damages the mushrooms in an early stage

Hey mate. Do you run the uv light non-stop, or do you run it in intermittent cycles? Cheers!

I'm gonna use a air filter and water filter

i use Crocs too for lab hahaha
thanks for the review of the UV lamp, seeing the results i think the best option is to have a drain on the tote with an elbow touching the bottom, in order to make syphon and be able to drain almost all water easily, and then have it draining constantly small amount of water, to ensure it gets renewed/or at least diluted each day. Another option is to just drain completely each few days, to renew all the water at once. I installed the drain that way, but i have to seal well again the fittings of the drain cause if it gets air the syphon doesn't work.

What if you add a little H2O2 to the water, wouldn't that slow down that spore increase as well as kill any hidden bacteria and microbial in the water hidden under the atomizer? I've been experimenting with UV light on a much smaller scale but I must say it seem to be light and day with contaminations.

Why no submerge a mirror on the bottom of the tank reflecting the UV back up under the mister?

Cross are probably the single UGLIEST pair of shoes I've ever seen. But when it comes down to it, I'd wear them too, if it helped with growing mushrooms.
