I saw there was a comic that had Bane with a great character. When a group of criminals he worked with attacker a rich guys home, they were ready to take his daughter (a little girl) hostage, so he tore the hostage takers arm off and broke every one of their backs. One guy begged him not to break his back, so Bane respected his wish and threw him out of the window instead. When asked who saved her, he said batman saved her (when batman was MIA and crime was rising)

Yes, Bane at times was able to beat the Dark Knight, but in the continuity (idk which one specifically) where Bane kills Alfred, Batman beats bane to a bloody pulp.
