Get a window into the Graphic Design and Type jury discussions, from what the jurors loved in 2024, to what’s trending.

The power in one shortlisted entry in the D&AD Awards 2024 Graphic Design category was its interplay between contemporary design language and indigenous quilting, weaving and craft, so explained Tyrone Ohia, Founder and Creative Director at Extended Whānau. Speaking alongside his fellow D&AD Award Judges on the Jury Insights: Graphic & Type Design panel, Ohia unpicked what worked so well in Quilts for Collaboration, Sid Lee’s work for Canadian higher education institution LCI Éducation: “Through an indigenous lens you get to push the modern identity – and all the practical tasks it needs to do – further.” As such, he added, the work demonstrates the power of two worlds talking to each other to create something completely fresh and new. This was just one example in a shortlist of works that pushed the boundaries of what is possible within the category, and in the case of Sulekha Rajkumar, Type Designer and Judge, left the panel thinking “I wish I’d thought of that.”

Panellists: Amah-Rose Abrams, Tyrone Ohia, Sulekha Rajkumar, Rosey Trickett, Andi Rahmat, Liron Lavi Turkenich
