The 2AZ-FE engine is actually one of the best 4 cylinder engines Toyota ever made. More so the 2002-2006 versions of this engine. While they did suffer from the back three cylinder head bolts stripping out, they did not experience oil consumption issues. It wasn't until 2007 that oil consumption became a problem. 2007 is when they started using low-tension piston rings in an effort to improve fuel economy. The quick way to tell if your engine has the low tension rings from the factory or not is just to look at the oil fill cap: if it says 5w30, then it is one of the good engines. If it says 5w20 or 0w20, it has the low tension rings which burn oil.
I own a 2002 Camry (2AZ-FE) with almost 210, 000 miles and it runs great. The only oil loss I experience is due to a seeping valve cover gasket and leaking valve stems seals, both of which I intend to replace at some point. Otherwise, the engine is flawless, gets great MPG and has decent power.

2007 scion tc with 270k miles. I had the engine rebuilt at 240k miles because i was going through about a quart of oil for every 1000 miles. No smoke, no leaks, i just figured i would do it because i had the money and i got a new job that required me to travel long distances. A couple of weeks ago i believe my 5th gear synchro went out. For a couple of months going from 4th to 5th gear i would get a little grind if i didn't rev match or go slowly. On the freeway i let off the gas going slightly down hill and it felt a little more rough than usual and also when i would push on the gas pedal, i was trying to diagnose it as i did it a third time and when i gave it gas my rev "blasted off" as if it was a total slipped clutch. I put it in 4th and drove home. When in neutral i could hear some kind of rough rattling/grinding going on in the trans as if something was broke, when clutch engaged it would go away.

2006 Highlander With 196k miles and still running, however it burns oil. But a great engine indeed...

Well that depends on how you define "better" the 2azfe is a million mile motor if maintained properly, sure it's not a 2jz or a 1uz or hell even a 2grfe, but its a reliable, relatively quick engine, with huge aftermarket support.

Just my 2 cents

Good tip when looking at cars with this engine. The oil burning issue only happens in the 2006+ models when toyota did an engine refresh changing the piston rings to low tesion ones. If your 2az car takes 5w20 or 0w20, then you the updated, oil burning one. If it take 5w30 then your fine.

Now at 285k miles I consider my camry a polished turd. Still gets 27 mpg. Goes through bout a quart a month orso. Lots and lots of engine noise hense why I change oil at 2500 mi and use high mileage mobile 1 full synthetic. It's been a very reliable car.

At least Toyota makes piston kits and updated short blocks for 2008 and up 2aZ that fix this problem making a very reliable engine if you want to go that route. If your car is in good shape its worth it when compared to the cost of used cars

My dads got the 2008 rav4 with the 2az-fe with the oil consumption but it still hauls ass for a four cylinder

Coming up to 300k miles on mine. Still runs like a top. Never had any engine or oil consumption issues. Just kept up on regular routine maintenance

tbh....its a really good engine tho, i have a toyota ipsum 240s, or also know as Toyota picnic, i haven't have any engine issues ever, maintenance wasn't on time but regular driving everyday its a good engine nd for that small engine packs a lil punch for a minivan, the odo is 201.000 km

Shenanigans aside. I'm rebuilding my 2006 rav4 2azfe. I want some extra umph and to correct the piston ring issues. I have noticed aftermarket pistons have standard sized oil rings, while even the updated pistons still have thinner oil rings. That was what made it consume oil, was the oil rings were too thin. So they made them just a smidgen thicker, however they're still a half a mm thinner than aftermarket. Which is a big difference. So I may go aftermarket on those. But my main question Is, will the 2008 camshafts work in the 2006 engine, as far as timing and reluctors etc?

Why use heavy weight oil and not the weight printed on oil cap? How would that help with oil consumption?

Good engine once pistons were replaced.

Will u marry me? I am told I give good massages too. Mechanics need that due to always bending and twisting their back. I'm told I give a great internal massage 😂😂😂😂

Just ignore me, I'm dehydrated. 😂
