What insights can the women's suffrage movement offer on challenges facing women and the nation today?

Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton, filmmaker Michelle Ferrari, historians Martha Jones and Elaine Weiss discuss the women's suffrage movement and what it can reveal about democracy today.

One hundred years after the passage of the 19th Amendment, The Vote tells the dramatic culmination story of the hard-fought campaign waged by American women for the right to vote — a transformative cultural and political movement that resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history.

In its final decade, from 1909 to 1920, movement leaders wrestled with contentious questions about the most effective methods for affecting social change. They debated the use of militant, even violent tactics, as well as hunger strikes and relentless public protests. The battle for the vote also upended previously accepted ideas about the proper role of women in American society and challenged the definitions of citizenship and democracy.

Exploring how and why millions of 20th-century Americans mobilized for — and against — women’s suffrage, The Vote brings to life the unsung leaders of the movement and the deep controversies over gender roles and race that divided Americans then — and continue to dominate political discourse today.

As a very young woman, my grandmother moved to Chicago with her sister from Vicksburg MS in the early 20s. They were part of the African American migration to work in the northern . I now realize from the Vote that the desire to vote may have played an exciting part of her great migration. She was very involved in Black Womens political clubs. Loved the Vote and this discussion.

Love Hillary's mention of the Seneca Falls Convention with Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Women's History isn't taught in History Class. I am just now learning about Women's Suffrage myself. Stanton was an Abolitionist before starting the Women's Suffrage Movement

I usually enjoy and look forward to this series. I have no interest in listening to Hillary Clinton talk about anything after the 2015/16 debacle. I’ll be back for the next episode .

with the long struggle to gain that right to vote, I'm still SO sad & VERY upset about those people who threw that precious right away & failed to VOTE in 2016. Secretary Clinton SHOULD HAVE BEEN our 1st Woman President
