SNS Grills Travel Kettle Review - Best Portable Charcoal Grill Ever!

I bought the SNS Travel Kettle earlier this year 2023 and have done probably 10+ cooks on it.

I absolutely LOVE this grill. It's really pretty amazing with all the features.

I did some testing on it and was able to maintain a 225 F temp after overshooting it and dialing it back. Took about 45 mins for me to nail the temp and then it held pretty dang steady for like 3-4 hours. Then I got bored. haha

OH and when you close all portals (it has 2 - the smoke portal AND the temp probe portal), close the top and bottom vents then this thing will completely snuff out your fire VERY quickly. The outside will be warm to the touch after like 1 hour and completely cooled in like 1.5-2 hours TOPS. To me, this is a VERY important detail because not only does it allow you to accurately control your cooking temps but also shut it down and move it without having to dump still lit coals.

All these features just make for a wonderful experience!! I seriously LOVE this thing.

The only complaint I have is if you want to do a reverse sear on steaks using the spinning grill AND a wired meat thermometer, it's better to simply have the meat thermometer coming out of the kettle NOT using the port.

WHY? Notice the difference between the bigger kettle and the travel kettle, the probe port in the larger one is ABOVE the cooking grate but in the travel kettle, it's below the cooking grate. This means in the travel kettle when you want to sear, you have to unthread the temp probe THROUGH the grate and through the hole. That's difficult when everything is so hot.

BUT honestly that's a minor issue - just drape the temp probe out of the side and most probe cable can handle that just fine. On longer cooks it won't be an issue at all because no reverse sear at the end.

ALSO, I SO WISH that SNS had made the charcoal basket with a sealed water reservoir like they do with the larger SNS basket because in the travel kettle, space is an issue so having to put water pan somewhere takes up valuable cooking real estate.

Having said all that I would still buy this again. It's added so much fun and joy to my cooking that I can't understand how I went so long without a grill. This has become a regular part of my life in a little over 1 month.

I found a really great portable travel table on Amazon and it's perfect height to set this on and cook all day everyday. Just look for "PORTAL Lightweight Aluminum Folding Square Table". It's perfectly sized for this kettle and it's VERY sturdy, lightweight, comes with it's own bag.

Also if you want a grilling mat for underneath the kettle so hot embers don't burn your deck or wooden table, Grilltex has a great 27" round mat that fits perfectly under this kettle and on the table I mentioned above. I found the mat on Amazon also.

It's almost as if the kettle, table and grilling mat were all made for each other. I think SNS Grills should actually offer a bundle like this. I suspect it would be wildly popular with the travel market.

Anyways - the best part of all of this can pretty easily take this whole rig with me wherever I go!!

I just picked this up and am very impressed. I have a Jumbo Joe, and this address all my wishlist for the Jumbo Joe. Well Done SnS!! I use their easy spin grate and slow and sear in my 26 and standard kettle. This little guy will likely get a lot of use moving forward.

Love my SNS Kettle and I'm sure I'd love this mini as well. Gr8 review Jabin. The only thing I wish I had known when I got my kettle was that the package was available with the "deluxe" SNS! I asked them about it and they told me I was too late in requesting it as I had my kettle over three months when I found out you could get it with the deluxe...being on a fixed income these days, can't afford to spend more on the deluxe, so stuck with the regular non removable water reservoir...just can't beat the SNS Kettle in my opinion tho!

How about a review after you have actually used the grill? It’s your favorite travel grill but how would you know as you haven’t used it yet. I thought that the full-size SnS was great until a few cooks in when I started to see some of the downsides to it. I still prefer my trusty Weber kettle to the SnS model. This grill may be great but we won’t know until someone actually uses it.
