=======================================

🧬 Glenn Miller is well-known throughout the United States for his unique basso-profundo voice, specializing in Russian liturgical choral repertoire, which began with singing and recording the Rachmaninoff Vespers in 1989 as a member of the Robert Shaw Festival Singers. To date he has performed this work well over 100 times across the country and has made five recordings of the work. He has performed and recorded regularly with Conspirare (Austin) and was the featured soloist on this ensemble’s recording which was awarded a Grammy in 2014 for best choral recording, “The Sacred Spirit of Russia,” performing Chesnokov’s “Do not cast me off in my old age,” a choral concerto for basso profundo. It is thought that Miller’s recording was the first of the original ending of the work, which requires the singer to sustain a low G1 (the lowest G on the piano). Glenn is widely respected and regarded as not only one of the greatest basso profundo singers of today, but of all time. He inspires young bass singers and musicians around the world, and believes at all moments of practice and performance that serving the music is the ultimate goal. Peter and Glenn discuss his career, approach to vocal technique, what makes his voice so rare, favorite performances, repertoire, what Glenn hopes to accomplish as he moves forward in his career, and much more. Please welcome Glenn Miller.

This entire interview was fantastic, but I’m really enjoying these shorter excerpts of the “highlights:” it just makes it much more digestible. Thank you for recording this interview with Glenn, he’s truly an inspiration to all the bass nation. Wonderful to see your channel (and your professional career) growing so quickly! Keep up the great work!

I think Peter Barber is right about the fact that most of how your low notes sound is how you’re born. I think 95% of it is genetics while only 5% is how you train. Most of the basses I’ve heard about (with the exception of a VERY SMALL number) claimed that they didn’t choose to become a bass it just happened.

I wonder Peter Barber, can you describe to me your own musical journey and how you became a bass singer and all of that?

3:32 I never found that to be useful for my low notes lol. Are basses and baritones different in the techniques they use?

Without training I was able to sing a consistent c#2 according to online pitch detectors a d#5 for my high chest voice.

I have low notes, but they aren't viable to sing bass or baritone so I trained as a tenor and now I'm a light lyric tenor.

I prefer to sing bass, but my normal speaking voice is not as low as when I sing.

Should I purposely sing lower than my normal speaking voice? Or are people supposed to sing exactly how the sound when they speak?

See what I mean?

I imagine that for wannabe basses it is counterintuitive to work on their top range. I hope they are watching/listening.

I can go really low without effort... unfortunately, I can't sing. My ear is terrible, I couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.

So the answer is *you can't.* But, of course you'd lose clicks if that was the title of this video 😐

FALSE. Maybe YOU can't, but others have and do broaden their range in the lower direction. If you don't know the answer to the question, just say you don't know instead of pretending authority, misinforming others and limiting their possibilities.
