The two most critical dimensions when working on the barrels of a shotgun is bore diameter and barrel wall thickness. It’s easy to take these measurements when you have the right tools. Watch along as Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, introduces the tools and methods for taking these measurements. A Skeet’s Bore Gage will be used to take the bore diameter measurements and a Newboult and Thorpe Barrel Wall Thickness Gage to measure barrel wall thickness.

Always like these videos. Minor correction: I think the first gauge is a STARRETT not a SKEETS.

Wall thickness is a very critical dimension for safety. That’s why you get a component gun smith who has the proper tooling and knows how to use them. Better to be safe than sorry. If you have a questionable shotgun—don’t think about shooting it until this very important criteria is determined.

I have searched the internet for a supplier of these tools that will ship to the UK without success .. any help in obtaining them at a reasonable price would certainly be appreciated.
