Here we go with the competitive talk, what’s next we need open back, and some 7.1 🤦‍♂️

I agree 100%. I’ve been doing all of my gaming with a headset since 2007 when Mass Effect launched. The experience and immersion I got from it changed the way I looked at games. I haven’t gone back to TV speakers since

The reason audio is more important to me than FPS or resolution is the following: immersive audio gives me goosebumps when I listen to it, 4K resolution at 144 Hz does not.

Wish game creators really starting using Atmos sound. That would really improve audio in games. Very few games use it and has not been done great.

Exactly this. I was looking for a new headset to replace my old Logitech G430, which served my needs plenty well but it was worn down and wired. My priorities was it had to be wireless, comfortable to wear, good looking and around 100-150$. I started looking at HyperX and Logitech headsets, and before I knew it I was on my way purchasing higher end wired sennheiser headphones above my budget and needs. When searching for reviews and opinions on gaming headsets I've found I was met with phrases like "Headsets are for kids", "Gaming headsets are just junk in disguise", "Buy a proper set of headphones and a separate mic", "Wireless headsets are garbage" etc. Your video sums it up pretty good. Remember YOUR needs when buying a headset as you do when buying everything else. I'm now waiting for a pair of HyperX Cloud 2 wireless and a pair of Wicked Cushions because that's sufficient for MY needs (Thanks for the discount code btw, Techne!)

I kinda think it's the professionalization of video games that's doing all of this. Everyone needs that next top spec or whatever so that more people will watch them stream, get the most kills, etc, instead of just enjoying a game.

Use of audio in different game genres:

FPS: where your enemies are and what kind of place they're at (i.e. muffled footsteps tells you they're indoors)
MMO/MOBA: in-game announcements (lorem ipsum has been slain; potentially important in team working to know where you've been "breached"), kinds of spell cast (each may have a unique sound effect), listening for a crumbling tower (meaning the first point but in a structural context, particularly in LoL)
Indie games: fun sound effects from doing different tasks/unlocking a particular kind of achievement, in-game soundtrack/music.

I'm the same way with audio! Not just gaming and music, but movies as well. If the sound design and mix doesn't get you immersed, than their is something wrong!

Think it depends on the game honestly. Audio is very important for immersion, but some games benefit more from this than others. Horror games? Audio is very important. Classic puzzle games? Not so much. I think it's a combination of the audio and the art STYLE (not so much pure 'graphics') that make games immersive (proper animations, voice acting, and WORLD BUILDING help too). Good audio can be helpful for competitive if the game is mixed well but honestly, I can hear footsteps and shot directions with most of the headsets I tried just fine.

Yes definitely is very important, without good audio, nobody would hear footsteps or amazing soundtracks from games.

i think audio is underrated but def not the most important
people need to appreciate audio way more❤️

i really agree with you beside performance of the game (i mean PC high refresh rate) audio is massively important to get in to that game.

Audio is 100% most important. I'm a diamond overwatch player who specializes in Genji/Tracer and awareness is EVERYTHING. Spot on as usual techne

On the Audeze Maxwell pre-order train. 3 things I'm hoping for a stinkin cozy headset, a review from yourself and hopefully stinkin cozy replacement pads. Hopefully I won't need replacement pads for them BUT I like options!

Awesome video! For gaming and general use of PC I do agree audio is one the the 3 most important things.
Right there with your monitor and keyb+mouse.

Personally, in terms of gear:
1. Monitor (1ms input lag, 120hz, at least 1080p)
2. A good headset or physical surround sound set up
3. Controller/mouse and keyboard (I'm a scuf guy myself)

this is top tier video, because a basic indie game could be so immersive once you put on the best fitting audio headset.

As a tarkov main unfortunately you’re right. Praying for them to get the audio right more then anything

What's important on gaming is to not get blown out by the sound of gunshots, but at the same time, be able to listen to footsteps and audio cues... To do that, you need a compressor. The easiest way is by using a good 7.1 virtualization(sennheiser GSX 1000) along with Equalizer APO and some VST compressor plugins.

Headphones are a must, especially someone like me who mainly plays FPS and single player games on the side. Using a TV speaker just feels naked because you can’t pin point foot steps
