This is such a beautiful expression of the human experience. We want our love to be everlasting and our pain to be remembered 😢

7, 000–6, 000 year old burial in Vedbaek, Denmark contains the remains of a young woman and her newborn baby, who are thought to have died together in childbirth. The woman is believed to have been around 20 years old when she died, and the burial includes 200 red deer teeth by her head, a bone hairpin, and red deer hooves wrapped around her. The baby is cradled in a swan's wing with two flint knives at its hip, which suggests it was a boy.

They did not look like the art there, if you look closely at the excavation photo, the woman is laying stretched out and the baby is next to her. Next to the woman's head is a cluster of deer teeth (200) if anyone is wondering. The baby was a premie, so they most likely died together in childbirth.
Edit: the illustration is made by Adam Brockbank, and is part of a comic called "Mezolith". The illustration is loosely based on this pair, the Vedbaek mother and baby.

I see several people commented something about angels... I'd just like to point out that the swan wing is most likely meant as an attempt to do something like summon a valkyrie in a religious burial ritual.

I suppose valkyries and the angels of Abrahamic religions are somewhat similar. But given that this burial took place in pre-Christian Denmark, it was most definitely a valkyrie and not an angel that they were thinking of.

Just fyi - Another name for Valkyrie is Swan Maiden. Valkyries are closely associated with swans.

Plenty of women died in childbirth throughout the ages. They still do more often than you think even in first world countries. Fortunately not nearly as often as they used to though.

That is amazing... This really moved me. My sweet little Boston Terrier who was the love of my life passed away 2 days ago in my arms. Her last minute right before she went into her death throws, she cocked her beautiful little face and looked up to see my face and she calmly stared into my eyes as she slipped away. All i could do was slowly pet her and say, "I love you so much Boo. You're such a good girl, go night night bubs, daddy will be right behind you when you wake up. I love you so much Boo. I love you more than you'll ever know." And with that said her body went limp and the light in her big old eye's went dark as if someone flipped a switch. I haven't stopped crying since. She didn't suffer towards the end and i could tell she was content and happy by the look on her face. She gave me 15 years of the most unconditional love and friendship I've ever had. I can't even explain how strong our bond was. She took a huge portion of my heart with her. I can understand why there's a swan wing under the child.

I was married to an abuser. My baby was breach so I needed a c section. On way to hospital he said passably “ just think if this was a 100 years ago you the baby would have died. The husband, Who buried them on the other hand loved them dearly.

I think she died in childbirth and their loved ones gave them wings to cross over. So beautiful

I think the swan's wing was laid in rest with them to aid their journey to the afterlife. It's heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. That mama just wanted the world for her baby, just to lose it and the world (this is my perception of the art/remains, I'm also a young mom who's almost lost everything multiple times, so this resonates hard)
