From the cat's eye level (when the camera gets that low), the illusion is lost, because the mat is not straight and the bends of the actual mat are more noticeable than the actual illusion.

Well you need some sort of control to make sure they aren’t just interested in the new rug that they haven’t seen before

What you NEED for this to actually work is one of those removable vinyl Fatheads people put on their walls, but one of a big checkerboard hole. Then it won't look from the cat's perspective like just a carpet, which is probably why they aren't falling for it in most of these videos. They know what the edge of a carpet looks like.

The test would be to put a regular rug without an optical illusion there and see how the cats react. Sometimes they’re just curious about new rugs.

...so, this is great but...its meant to be an illusion from our perspective. if you get on the floor at a cats eye view, it doesn't look as convincing.

...makes me wonder if one was made tailored to them, how would they act?

A cat invented this to amuse other cats because their humans have been fooled into thinking the cats are being fooled.
