The Sumerians existed in Mesopotamia between 4000 BC and 2000 BC and are considered one of the oldest civilizations in history. The written sources and art pieces they left behind provide valuable insights into the political, economic, religious, and social life of this ancient civilization.

Our knowledge of the Sumerians' social life, mythology, religion, and rituals is based on sources consisting of about three thousand tablets and fragments written in cuneiform dating from around 1750 BC. Some of these tablets have been translated into modern languages and made comprehensible, but some remain undeciphered. Due to the broken or incomplete parts of the tablets, the full texts cannot be read.

The cultural and intellectual legacy of the Sumerians influenced many civilizations and served as a model for them. The first creation and flood stories, traditions such as decorating the New Year tree, wedding rings, and the evil eye bead were initiated by the Sumerians. Therefore, the position and value of the Sumerians in history are different and special compared to other civilizations.

The Sumerians believed in multiple gods. Additionally, the fact that the gods they described with human qualities had families and even children led to the formation of a pantheon of gods.

In the Mesopotamian region, each city had a protective deity. The ranks of these gods in the pantheon changed over time depending on the development and growth of the Sumerian cities.

The gods of important cities were worshipped and respected in other cities as well. City gods dealt with significant issues and communicated only with major kings or important priests. In Sumerian theology, it is believed that city gods did not have enough time to deal with everyone.

In this video, we will examine in detail the three most ancient gods known as the Heaven Trio, who are at the center of Sumerian culture and belief system.
