Fallout 4 Next-Gen Upgrade Patched: Fixed on Xbox, Improved on PS5 - But Issues Remain

Fallout 4's 'next-gen' upgrade launched with a range of issues - not least that the quality mode didn't work on Xbox consoles. Bethesda Game Studios has fixed that issue, but actually opened the door to a whole range of quality vs performance options - and added those options to PlayStation 5 as well. Tom Morgan re-reviews the upgrade with a comprehensive range of testing, finding that the new options are welcome - but the intrusive hitching isn't and needs addressing.

Corvega Factory should be renamed to The Digital Foundry.

AND they took away the ability to swap modes in-game via the Pause menu. Tom had to do all of this testing via the Main Menu, loading and quitting to try each mode.

I wonder how many hours Tom has spent at Corvega.

Not hitting max pc settings on a game that looked dated when it 1st came out is kinda tragic tbh

As much as updating this old game sucks for all the mod breaking, I'm glad to see another publisher give both a 40fps mode and trust in VRR for a 60fps high visuals mode. We were all told to go buy 120hz vrr displays for this generation, its about time mandatory 30fps is left in the past where it belongs.

Hope they fix the stutters when you enter a new area and VATS being bugged. A bump of storage space for mods would be good too.

You should also have talked about PC version.

It is incredible game FPS are still tied to physics.
Weapon debris still crashes the game when enabled.
Loading times are incredibly high sometimes.

Not even the bare minimum has been fixed.

All those frame drops, especially around downtown boston are more than likely down to the engine rather than the systems themselves. Even on high end hardware on PC's there are drops around downtown.

Watching a DF video of a game I bought 9 years ago. Not even a DF Retro video either. 😂

They really just said fuck it and gave everyone all the options rather than fine tuning any mode.

I wish they would have have fixed some bugs and performance issues on pc. You can still softlock a couple of quests, weapon debris still crashes the game, bugs everywhere. Kind of ridiculous

I'm so glad they added the freedom to choose the graphics and frame rate target on console even if it isn't perfect now this will greatly benefit the game in the future on better hardware

At 3:38, the PS5 footage is missing LODs, objects, and details in the middle section, and the terrain appears to be present at a lower poly-count. The blue car in the distance, the truck, and other structures there are absent in the middle of the road but are visible on the Series S. This suggests that the footage may be mislabeled or there is an issue with the PS5 version.

even with the update it's crazy it can't run 4K 60FPS fluid...

It should be noted that running at 1440p on Visuals/60 on PS5 is still the way to go for balance between visuals and stability. When the patch came out, my last save was at Diamond City at night with rain. I had very noticeable drops loading that save in 4K/60/Visuals mode right away, but when I closed the game and reset my PS5 resolution back to 1440p and selected Visuals/60 again.. the drops were gone.

On PS5, using VATS in the 60fps visuals mode is an interesting experience. It's a slide show in many instances. It's completely playable, but I often fear the game is about to crash as it starts lurching to a crawl.

One thing they desperately need to add is deadzone/aim acceleration sliders. Luckily I have a Dualsense Edge, so I've been able to mess with the right stick curve, but it's still not ideal. Fallout 4 has one of the biggest deadzones I've ever encountered.

Can Bethesda please decouple the creation club content from the main install?

Some of us just like to play vanilla and this inflates the install size.

This is a nice development. Since they let you freely choose the framerate target, would be nice if a framerate counter was also included, so that you can see if you are hitting the target or if you should switch to a different one.
