The primary muscles in the movement are the hamstrings, not the glutes. Although the glutes are still used due to hip extension

What I tell everyone for RDLs is to start like you’re doing a real deadlift not that sumo deadlift weak shit but a real deadlift. Once you lift up the weight, slowly lower it as if you were getting ready to put it on the floor to do another deadlift rep but stop lowering the weight when it gets to be around six inches off the floor (case by case depending on your arm length, height, etc), then lift up. Once you get the hang of the motion, it helps to close your eyes to have that mind muscle connection to really focus on which muscles to engage. Don’t forget to control the weight. Or, and I know this is pretty controversial, but you could instead just do real deadlifts, use lifting straps so you could go real heavy and load up on weight, and then pound out reps. You’d definitely build a dumpster back there doing that.
