My mom used to do nails for this lady that swore her house had duendes. She said her family would wake up at night to the duendes running a mock in her kitchen and even mess with the dogs at night riding them and pulling on their tails and ears. Of course she had no evidence to back up her stories but she offered for us to stay the night at her house of course we said no but it’s one of those stories that I always think back on randomly lol. Duende’s come from Spain, it is a being that goes back to the celtiberians. The word “duende” comes from the south of Spain meaning “dueño de” or “master”. There are many different types of duende. Some of these types are trasgu, follets, doñets, tentirujo, trastolillos, pesantas, manona, martinicos, and the trasnos. The fun part is, they all have different temperaments and different rules they play. When the Spaniards went to Mexico and Philippines, they called their native fae “duende” because it is the closest thing they can attribute the alux and Filipino goblin to. Those beings that Mexico and Philippines call “duende” today had different names and lore before the Spaniards went there. Spaniards brought their own duende’s with them too.
