Temporary Fix, Permanent Cost: Why Health Insurance Is Expensive | Intellections

The government is quick to enact policies during a crisis, but policies that sound good in the short term can have bad long-term consequences. Government-mandated wage and price controls during World War II prompted employers to lobby for employer-paid health insurance that was not counted as taxable income. When wage and price controls were lifted, the tax-free status of employer-paid medical care remained in place, driving up medical costs and health care premiums for all.

The thing is, that policy wasn't good in the short term either.

Because we pay our premiums before our income is taxed that makes the insurance cost more expense?? How does this even make sense!?? I have yet to find an employer thats pays the full premium as a benefit, maybe a portion but not full amount. I call BS on this, change my mind..

Can someone explain to me what 0:50 means? It sounds like jargon...

This is grossly oversimplifying, and seems to blame the government's decisions instead of the free market. Keep in mind, both are bad, but one is not being talked about here. Most likely, this is just to scare people away from a single-payer system, but how in any way did the original government legislation in WW2 prompt employers, when it states in the video that the employers lobbied the government for it in the first place. This is supposed to come off as 'we need less government regulation', but it doesn't seem to comprehend that the problem stems from having employers pay off politicians in the first place. Billionaires don't have lower class interests at heart, as it turns out.

I don't fully understand 0:50, but as a laymen it sounds like this is a justification for an increase in taxes... That doesn't sit well with the too powerful lobbyists or even the common man because that's a fundamental reason as to why this country exists

Obfuscating coverage of the subject at best.

You know you’re propaganda when you try to blame the sick for seeking care. Thanks for your video promoting unrestricted capitalism even if it means people can’t afford to seek medical attention.
