Big thanks to Hover for sponsoring this video!

Your resume is a key tool for impressing recruiters and landing jobs, internships, and sometimes even scholarship. Yet people often make HUGE mistakes on them - mistakes that can land their resume in the trash.

Today, we'll cover five of those mistakes, and I'll share tips and examples for how you can avoid them.

If you're curious, here's my resume:

1. Listing job duties instead of accomplishments
2. Grammatical errors
3. Listing in chronological order instead of relevance to the job
4. Ignoring unpaid experience
5. Using the same CV for all positions

My mistake was that I wrote a cover letter to one company and sent it to their competitor 😅

Since I'm not applying for any specific job, it's not tailored and the experience is in (roughly) chronological order - which isn't necessarily the best order, as the video points out. However, you might find the accomplishment descriptions and formatting to be useful as examples.

If you have other career questions, let me know about them! I want to start mixing in videos like this amongst the academic/productivity videos, as I think this topic is needed too.

Another tip for students: don't feel like you have to emphasize education or formal work experience. If you have side projects that are more relevant to the position than your coursework (an unspoken rule in the tech sector), dedicate more space to that.

Best way to avoid typos and grammatical errors: run it though a text to speech program. You'll get to hear how it sounds aloud instead of in your head and it'll mispronounce any typos.

Your videos have always helped me grow during my academic life, and now that it's time I start writing my resume (for my internship), you have come to the rescue again. Thank you for being there in every step of the way!

Quantifying your resume is probably the BEST thing I could've done. Thankfully, I learned this early on and I've been adding numbers and percentages ever since then. Great vid!

I have listened to Thomas before. I believe it was when I was looking for information on being a healthcare entrepreneur. This guy has a lot of common sense and must read a heck of a lot. I would follow his instructions anytime. I will finish my master's in healthcare management in two days. I now find myself listening to the same guy just before this master's and right near the end. He is some very special. Thank you, Thomas Frank. I will be back to us hover. Just not tonight.

Wow! Thank you Thomas Frank! I've been trying to get a job for a while and I never realized until now that I've been using the same resume over and over again to apply to jobs. I realized with some help that my resume wasn't up to par. I've texted, I called, and I met failure several times! Thank you for giving the strength to try again!

I will put into practice all these tips but first, congratulations on the high quality of every one of your videos. Also, I need to express how aware I am on your evolution as an orator. Making youtube videos have helped you out to convince and sell the ideas to your audience. I am so proud of you and definitely, I would try to improve myself because you are being one of my inspirations.

Great advice, especially important now more than ever given the competition in the job market! Even small tweaks can make a difference between being rejected and getting an interview invitation.

>willing to work 18 hours a day
Counterpoint: Companies that are looking for willingness to work 18 hours a day are not companies that anyone should be looking for employment at. Work life balance is an incredibly important aspect of any technical position.

I have been volunteering for one hour a week as a swim teacher for a long time, its worth more weight on my cv than my childcare experience as I can really show my leadership, communicating with parents and teamwork over a long period of time, never underestimate how valuable a small volunteer commitment can be, especially if the skills are transferable.

I wish I found this channel while I was still in undergrad, but hopefully the advice in your videos will help me on my journey to physical therapy school as well. And I'll definitely recommend your channel to a lot of my friends who are still in college
