My favourite “fact” about the squonk is that they cry so hard they turn into a puddle

I actually remember reading about a Squonk in one of the Bruce Coville "Book Of..." anthologies ("Byrd Song" by Nancy Springer) - it actually helped resurrect a phoenix by crying for it when it died, creating hybrid offspring that, though it still would cry itself to death (literally) if spotted by someone else, it would then resurrect like the phoenix afterward.
