Dies irae is a Latin hymn attributed to either Thomas of Celano of the Franciscans (1200 – c. 1265) or to Latino Malabranca Orsini (d. 1294), lector at the Dominican studium at Santa Sabina, the forerunner of the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Angelicum in Rome. The hymn dates from at least the thirteenth century, though it is possible that it is much older, with some sources ascribing its origin to St. Gregory the Great (d. 604), Bernard of Clairvaux (1090 – 1153), or Bonaventure (1221 – 1274).

It is a Medieval Latin poem characterized by its accentual stress and rhymed lines. The metre is trochaic. The poem describes the Last Judgment, trumpet summoning souls before the throne of God, where the saved will be delivered and the unsaved cast into eternal flames.

The hymn is best known from its use as a sequence in the Requiem (Mass for the Dead or Funeral Mass). An English version is found in various Anglican Communion service books.

The melody is one of the most quoted in musical literature, appearing in the works of many composers.

Note for music appreciation class: another example of monophonic texture would be the song used in HBO's miniseries _Chernobyl_ in episode 4 when they bury the animals.

You built your empire, from it's foundation to its spire, on the blood and bodies of millions of people. You are, the pinnacle of all, a king like no other. You fancy yourself untouchable, that no creature can touch nor judge you, then the trumpets

And you knew it is all over.

Thanks for the translation. It helps. However, it would have been nice if you had added the transcription of this chant.
I feel I must have lived during this time period as this music resonates with me so well. I enjoy meditating to it.

Prachtig, in een woord prachtig
Eindelijk leer ik de uitspraak van bijv Julius Caesar en begrijp ik de samenhang met ons woord : Keizer.
Deze zang heeft iets onsterfelijks.
Beautiful, in one word beautiful
Finally I get the pronunciation( latin?) of the word Keizer
This song showes some inmortality
I love latin

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is,  His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse. For even the trees stretch out they're arms towards the heavens praising him and glorifying him, the birds joyfully sing declaring his goodness..  remember satan has come to kill, seek, and destroy and has blinded the minds of unbelievers, making the cross foolishness to those that are perishing, but to those that are being saved it is the power of GOD unto life everlasting. Dont let the devil play you !! Repent come out from Babylon!!
