Toronto chief medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa announced on Monday that there were 1,301 cases of COVID-19 in the city, with 145 people in hospital and 60 in intensive care. She said there have been a total of 32 deaths in Toronto since the outbreak began. Of the deaths, de Villa said 15 were within retirement and long-term care home settings.
Mayor John Tory, Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg and de Villa gave a briefing on Monday into the ongoing response to COVID-19 in the city.
Tory continued to stress the importance of abiding by physical distancing not just in public spaces but also in stores. He said the city had received reports from some grocery stores of people not abiding by measures put in place to allow for physical distancing. The mayor said that this included people who were not elderly shopping during the designated time for seniors, and people not keeping to the one-way aisles put in place in some stores. Tory criticized these actions as reckless and urged people to keep following the rules.
He also announced the city of Toronto had formed a partnership with corporate and community partners to ensure the food needs of vulnerable Torontonians are met, and that food banks, home delivery centres and food drop-ins will remain open. He said companies like Sobeys and Loblaws have donated food and other supplies. Tory added the city is also working with 211 and other organizations on food access programs, including those helping seniors, and is opening food banks at 10 Toronto Public Library locations.
