You said $1, 800 in supplies, $1, 000 in labor, and then added it to $3, 800?

Good video and you covered the basics but I own a fence company and there is definitely a lot more that goes into it. An owner operator company only works so far, you have to be able to work on your business and not in your business in the field every day. Storage, trailers, maintenance, finding good labor, limiting liability and accounting for overages and unforeseens can be costly all while trying to stay competitive. Not as cut and dry but definitely possible.

I love when homeowners do fence math. They have ZERO idea about what goes into it and the difference between a crappy fence and a perfect fence and the skill that goes into it.

Pickets are $2/ea x 400= $800
Posts are $28/ea x 25= $700
Quickrete mix $4/bag x 25= $100
2x4x16 treated $20/ea x 45= $900
Gate hardware $100
Siding nails $150
Screws/nails $100
Fuel for truck $100
Liability insurance $50
Worker’s compensation insurance $40
Commercial Truck insurance $15
Insurance on trailer, tools, customer material $50
Wear & tear on equipment $100
Air cartridges for nail gun, oil mix for auger, String line, general supplies $100
Warranty work for cheap pine tightwad customer picked out. $250
Knowledge to do it right so someone can critique your priceless

If you want to spend about $100k for startup equipment and “bulk” purchases of material for such an easy profession go for it, lol

I have my own fencing business in Texas. Operating a fencing company is not easy, especially now with shortage on material. I’m having better luck doing ornamental iron than wood fences nowadays. Something I wanted to point out, never sit your post how they did. Always mix your concrete before you dump it in the holes. Also keep in mind pine pickets are cheaper than cedar pickets. Pine is not what I recommend.

This is actually very doable, especially in Texas. I don’t know why I never thought of this but this is actually one of your best ideas.

I started a business in the fields that I was experienced in from my other jobs which was landscaping and tree work. I eventually extended my services to include deck and fence construction. If I were to start over again I would focus more on marketing decks and fences, but it is great to have the customer base in landscaping that I have built. Moving forward I will need to make a decision to completely change my business to exterior construction, or start another business in just that area. Your video is very insightful, fencing and general exterior construction is one of the most profitable businesses if you are good at it. Look into the finances of traditional and composite decking, I think you'll be interested.

I have a full time job, but am thinking of starting a fence business as we speak.I want to do the work myself so I can get all the money. I have all tools and truck already. I want my son to be my partner. The market where I live is wide open for a small handyman type business. No one here wants to or can afford to do small jobs because of the size of their crew. I enjoyed this video thanx

Quikcrete red bags just need 1 gallon of water per bag. They also cost a bit more than 2$ but they dry damn near instantly.

$300 profit a day ($600 in 2 days) as a business is pretty rough. A UPS driver makes way more than that, without even including their benefits package, and they’re just an employee. If I had a business that’s as hard on the body as doing fence, for $300/day, I’d apply myself to the state to get a disability check for having special needs.

Nice share. Just FYI, one does not level a post, they plumb a post.

Minus an office rep to take phone calls and make appointments, either in home or at the office. Minus $ for an office/lumber and materials yard. Minus vehicles payments/maintenance. Minus a salesperson that knows what they are talking about and can sell. Minus an accountant and or bookkeeper. This guy is only looking at what he actually encountered in front of his face. There is a lot of cost behind the scenes. After working 10 hours in the Georgia heat, are you going to have the energy to do the books, go on sales calls, and work on your 1 truck that just broke down. I don’t think so. You said yourself that you weren’t built for 95 degree heat and all you were doing was standing there talking. I doubt that at the end of the day installing fences, you’re going to have energy to do anything. Get real.

So. Someone is telling you to start a business in something they’ve never done or have any experience in other than buying materials and watching one come up. Where could one go wrong

They probably made around $2, 082.00 usually( depending on area) your materials are 43% labor 30% overhead( depending on the business) is around 10%, profit around 10%, taxes at 7% and the OSF( oh shit factor of + 25%) depending on the job and problems that could arise. Take the 2, 000 and subtract taxes, plus overhead, like the light bill, insurance, workers comp, truck maintance, equipment mantaince, insureance for truck and equipment, paying the office employee and shop employee etc... They bid to low. First company must of had a bigger overhead and couldn't do it for less.

How I did it :

Thing works more if your first car purchase is a shitty F150 like mine.

Work for a fence contractor.
Learn the Job.
Build a network.
While performing all of these next steps read the book Profit First.

First Pay check: ($1500)
Go Purchase all the tools necessary to build a fence in a proficient way. Air tools.

Second Paycheck ($850 or less)
Get your license, Bond and insurance! Its not hard just intimidating.
Pick a name! ( Don't get to caught up in name picking ) Remember Nike wasn't Nike till it became something.

Start Social Media posting, grow organically friends and family meet your neighbors! Help your community first then they will help you!

Quoting:
TO START PRICE THE MATERIAL DOUBLE IT THEN ADD 35%.
Some WILL SAY THATS TOO HARSH.

It's your time and your investment. You can't grow on scraps and you're worth more.

So this job that cost $1800 x 2 = 3600 + 35% = $4860 add Taxes for your area.

I'm 27 and about to tipple my last years revenue.

Hope this Helps.
Hustle Hard.

A good video idea for you would be to either make a video on how to find the best niche/biz to choose by looking at profits longterm. I know you already have them all laid out on your site, but show the deeper workings and profit of each. Would give a better idea for people should invest their time in learning. Or layout it already, so for example show why A. industry is better than all other companies, 1 employee can make $1500 in a day versus in a different industry it takes multiple employees making the same amount. Would give people a good head start looking to start there first business if their willing to learn the skills to get to it. Especially if your looking long term chances are you'd have a better chance of success and more profits if you choose something like Tree Service versus lawn mowing.
