The story that few have heard, that I heard many times growing up here in Maine, is the story of my great grandfather, the man who found Don Fendler. Years later, his daughter (my great aunt) met with Don at a school in Bangor where he was speaking with students who had just read his book. Don was quite moved when my aunt was able to jog his memory and accurately fill in the gaps around his rescue.

I read this book when i was 12 years old. He came to my school thst year and spoke. Got my book signed. 2 an a half years ago. I was hiking katahdin. On the way down from the peak. I took a bad srep. I blew out my kmee completly and as i went to ground i tore up my shoulder. Laid on mountain for two and half hours before i got rescued by chopper. This mountain is no jokes. Never underestimate it.

Also from Maine. Climbed katahdin roughly 30 times. Favorite place in the whole state, in the whole world! Can’t wait to see this.

Maine woods are NO JOKE really easy to get lost in. Even experienced hunters lose their bearings. We’ve got bogs and insanely uneven terrain all hidden by a tangle of fallen trees and thick undergrowth shaded by a thick canopy of leaves. You often can’t see terrain further ahead than 20 feet and entire lakes are often hidden from view. Direction is hard to determine sometimes. The whole rule “moss grows on the north side” does not apply here because the woods are so moist in most areas, and on overcast days you can’t even tell which direction the sun is.

I climbed Katadin twice when I was a boy back in 60-62. I just remember the big boulders going up and how flat it was on top. Our scout troop went down the back side, when my dad was the scout leader. Grew up in Orono

My father (who’s from Maine) read the book when he was little, and so did I. Saw it, and it was terrific.

Climbing Katahdin is no joke...took me 12 hours round trip this summer.

I first heard this story at the age of 12 sitting in a lean-to at Chimney Pond on Katahdin, with its sheer rock walls soaring up around us as our counselor from Scout camp read it to us in the summer of 1969. I believe it was during the successful moon landing mission. We were so far from"civilization" that we didn't know they'd made it till we got back. But Donn's story and being in those very woods were far more real to me than any space mission.

I have canoed the east branch and the sebois river in this area many times. Even today it is pretty wild country. He must have swam across the Penobscot river if he ended up in stacyville.

Oh man, as someone who grew up in Maine, this book was - almost literally - required reading in school. Must have read this five or six times, as well as school field trips to meet Donn Fendler (or maybe he came to our school? Can't recall).

Edit: Looks like they are adding a lot of fluff with regard to his dad and other unnecessary stuff (at least that wasn't featured in the book). Hopefully that's a small part, and the majority of the movie is his survival.

I'm from Maine. Got lost on Cadillac Mt. once. Obviously not as bad as lost on Kahtadin but in my particular situation the sun was setting and it was getting dark, plus nobody knew where I was.

I read this book half a decade before moving to Maine for a couple years when my mom remarried. Cool that Stallone picked it up.

Didn't get lost on that mountain, but I joined my scout troop up one side and down the other of Mount Washington.
Got lost in the woods, though. I was chasing my stepdad's dog, who had run off by himself. Overshot my backyard and got lost following a trail that I assumed was going to my next door neighbor's house. It went to classmate's house six miles down the main road. I didn't run into any danger that I was aware of, but I know for fact it could have gone a lot worse.
