Learn German | Der, die oder das Nutella? Foreign Words + German Genders | Deutsch Für Euch 107

Is it der, die oder das Nutella? And who even cares? In today's episode I try to clear up the mystery of what happens when foreign words that are imported into German are assigned an article/grammatical gender. How do we decide which gender norms an English noun will have to conform to? ...Wait. Wrong topic.

Learn German - mit Deutsch Für Euch!

What you need to do to be my intro:

Record yourself saying the following things:

"Hallo Leute! Ich bin ___ (You can say whatever you want here - name, (youtube) nickname, where you live, where you're from, why you're learning German, or anything else you'd like, one or more things. It's best if you do this part in German, too, but if you're too shy, English is fine as well - just try to keep the video to roughly 10 seconds or shorter) und ihr seht Deutsch Für Euch!"

Please don't edit your videos; if you'd like something changed (e.g. color correction), let me know in your email. I'll make sure to make you look as good as possible anyway, though ;)
I can use a lot of video formats, but your safest bets are the usual candidates: .avi, .mov, .mp4 - DON'T use .dv, please. Once you're happy with your video, send it to me via ONE of these channels:
- send me a link to a the video on YouTube, also via mail
- please title your message "DFE Intro"

There's NO time limit for this, this will be an on-going thing as long as you send me videos. I'm looking forward to your submissions - feel free to get creative with it! :)

Germans: Which articles do you use for IKEA and Nutella?
Everyone else: Feel like giving up yet?

Excellent, thank you. My command of German is way behind this level, but DFE remains the best YT resource for students of German that I've found. Lighthearted and fun, but the quality of teaching is superb. I really appreciate your hard work.

When I heard that Nutella could take any of the articles, I felt that "die Nutella" was right. I think I chose it that way because of "die Schokolade" and "die Haselnuss". I figured if those are both feminine then the combination of those could be too! 😂

I always imagined that somewhere in a local Rathaus, wise german scholars decided genders for English import words. Today has been a great disappointment for me...

I am a software developer and I can say with some conviction, that "Die Applikation" is the correct origin of "Die App", as "Applikation" was and still is a term used in german software development. Though I can totally understand, that this is not widely known, as programmers always had their own language, which had way more english words, that were "germanized" long before they became common/daily language for others.

Another word with various articles: apart from „die Straßenbahn“, you can also use the international word for this mode of transport - „die Tram“, however, once you're in Switzerland, it is „das Tram“.
Meanwhile, in Luxembourgish, which may, or may not be "just" a dialect of the German language, you say „d'Tram“, with Tram being a masculine noun, so „der Tram“ in Standard German.

When I started to learn German 4 years ago and I had lots of frustration with Articles finally I decided to give up with the article(except some rules). Now I have B1 German Certification and studying B2 and still don't know many German articles but I'm able to communicate and keep a long conversation going with native speakers. I realized even native speakers don't know many articles as well and make mistakes. I appriciate your hard work anyway

This is really interesting. In Swedish we would just take what feels right (and/or the form that gains the largest amount of followers). When it comes to brand names, we would most likely treat it as such and not use a gender at all. In German, der IKEA(möbelmarkt) or das IKEA(möbel-/einrichtungshaus) would make sense. But, come one, "die"? Echt jetzt? 😂

It is quite entertaining to watch this as a czech speaker and comparing which words match gender and which don't.
By the way, IKEA and Nutella are feminine in czech. Probably because of the feminine "-a" ending and the fact, that czech indicates gender by word endings and not by particles, just reinforce it.

'Die Garage' ist maskulin auf Portugiesisch: "A garagem"... Glücklich für mich.

In my German classes, we were told that the majority of loan words are neuter, but now I’m really not sure that’s right

Leute die DER IKEA sagen, also generell Geschäften mit Eigennamen einen Artikel geben wollen, sagen auch "Da vorne ist DER Hans" an Stelle von "Da vorne ist Hans" - fürchterbar.
Und bei Nutella ist es ja wohl klar ... DIE Nutella - sie ist süß und du liebst sie abgöttisch, trotzdem ist sie schlecht für dich, muss also weiblich sein ;)

Well, I think this kind of words rely in a huge extent on the purpose of it.

For example, in spanish, if i think of nutella as a "cream", which is femenine (la crema), I would call it "la nutella/die nutella"; but if I would like to have it as a dessert (yummy!), which is masculine (el postre), then I would call it "el nutella/der nutella".

In conclusión, it depends in how do you see it at the very moment.

Octopus is *Greek :) which is why the proper plural is octopuses, or if you're feeling fancy, octopodes.

Somehow I expected 'das Kraken' instead of 'der Oktopus'. That would have been hilarious.
