A-10 Warthog • King Of Close Air Support

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, nicknamed "Warthog" for its unusual appearance, has been flying for the U.S. Air Force since the 1970's and was specifically designed as a ground attack aircraft to destroy Soviet tanks. Over the years, the Warthog has become a legendary Close Air Support jet because of its huge 30mm gatling cannon (GAU-8) which fires depleted Uranium rounds capable of penetrating heavy armor, its long loiter time over targets, its high maneuverability, and its Titanium armor which contributes to survivability. In addition to having the deadly GAU-8, the Warthog can be armed with a variety of bombs and missiles adding to its lethality. If you check any list of "best close air support aircraft", you will find the A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthog is at the top of the list, or near the top of most every list you will find. This machine gun's sound is just ... frightening. Just imagine a band of F-10 jumping in and there is just a silence in a battlefield and only here and there. Just like some kind of a dragons would having their own feast. Fascinating and frightening at the same time.

I was at England AFB 23 TFW Flying Tigers. Love that Plane and never had to see it fight. works nights and went to range about 20 miles from base in the morning and watched them Shoot. Incredible to see and here.

I've seen the A-10 nose to nose and in flight. It carries a high-speed 6-barrel 30 mm (1.18 inch) cannon--- it makes that loud double-zipper sound --- that can rip a tank to shreds. It can loiter a few hundred feet above the ground and turn on a dime, a truly remarkable sight for a jet-powered aircraft.

This is one bad-ass machine, a perfect solution to a difficult problem. The Soviets called it "the Devil's Cross". I couldn't believe that anyone thought to retire this beautifully ugly airplane -- and fortunately smarter heads prevailed.

I remodeled a house on the Wawasee lake in Indiana. I would stay there during the week at the house while It was gutted to studs and floors ripped up. During my eight month stay, these would fly low over the lake and right over the lake house. It was an amazing thing to see.
