I played guitar for years but paid no attention to timing or strumming on the beat. I used to just strum a pattern that sounded a bit like the record, but was probably really sloppy. I'm guessing that learning to do this properly with a metronome (starting slowly) is the best way to progress without picking up sloppy technique.
