Had the exact same Issue on a X5 E70 ... Turns out that there are 3 rubber mounts with screws holding the soft close motor in place. 2 of them where broken. I repaired them and all working as normal again.

it looks like you are moving the plate to the right? seems like it should be moved towards the left to move the lock closer to the door? what is the logic here.

i have same issue 2008 E60 M5. I have tried about 30 different positions with no luck. I cannot find the sweet spot or I guess the mecanism is faulty. I had hope though!

Have this same problem after I shut my door on the seatbelt but mine is all one piece
