actually just deselect auto fill and draw a large closed shape, draw smaller closed shapes inside large closed shape, use the paint bucket to fill large closed shape with color, small closed shapes drawn inside will not be filled and have an alpha channel allowing you to see into the lower layers or background, the select shape tool is best for changing colors on a closed shape
