Every 747 can carry a 5th pod under the left wing

I also worked a lot on G-VWOW prior her leaving to join Virgin Galactic now Virgin Orbit, that aircraft never skipped a beat

I saw Cosmic Girl parked at Gatwick Airport while it was still in service for Virgin Atlantic.

I saw 747 number one and two being built and I watched number 2 roll out and eventually fly with my dad who worked on it, I have super eight movies of its first flight coming down Puget Sound off Edmonds Beach . Number one never flew, it was tortured and destroyed in stress test jigs. Dad took me in to watch some of that too! He worked on B-52 number 11, 707 number one, and the first 747 until his retirement and 99! Thanks dad!

I’ve actually worked on the Virgin Cosmic girl during my time as a ground engineer for Virgin Atlantic at that time we knew her as G-VWOW Cosmic Girl. I was working the day she departed for as we thought storage, but it turned out she was off to a new career. She was quite a new aircraft in very good condition, hope they’re treating her well in her new job!

I got to sit under the Cosmic Girl for a long time. I interacted with the team a lot. There is so much to tell about the aircraft. Who is flying it? That's a story on its own. When they bought the 747, they stripped it down and were astonished to see how well Virgin Atlantic maintained its fleet. Made me feel good because I flew them at the time.

It's an impressive airplane. The extra pylon looked almost mangaesque in its design.

What a great team. I would work for them in a heartbeat.

We spent an hour in the cockpit of a 747SP flying to Sydney on our honeymoon in 2000, thanks Quantis for a definite bucket list experience!

The 5th engine carry isn't a special variant it is part of the 747 design.

I've driven through Mojave a couple of times. Early in 2020 I saw Cosmic Girl there and didn't know why a Virgin Atlantic 747 was there. I learned about Launcher One late last year, and then it clicked for me.

Back in 2001 while living in Illinois about 30 miles north west of Chicago, one morning I saw a 747 SP flown by Mandarin Airlines circling in a racetrack hold pattern about a half mile south of me. Every time it made a turn, the pilot over compensated going wings level after its turn. The plane did this on every turn giving the impression of being flown by someone who wasn’t that good at flying. I was concerned enough after the 9-11 attacks with airliners that I called the local police who then contacted the FAA. It lucky turned out be nothing in that it was a legitimate flight, but convinced me that Mandarin Airlines pilot’s were sub standard.

The "dead" pylon Quantas used was an official option, but I think no other airline ever ordered it.

Even though she tried to kill me (fell off a work stand just above the left wing leading edge), I still love her. She was instrumental in teaching me to be the mechanic I am today. I worked on them with Northwest Airlines 1985-2005. Then after the strike was over & Delta bought NWA, I worked for Delta for 10 years 2010 - 2020. I retired 4 years ago & I still love watching videos of the aircraft.

I flew on Cosmic Girl back in 2014, so she has to be my favourite on this list

SP's were scheduled into EWR during the late 80's early 90's on the Tokyo run. Always enjoyed looking them over while I worked there for Continental.
