I love your reaction! I was 15 when this album came out and became an instant fan of hers and have remained one all these years. She really is in a league of her own. I have also wondered if she’s working with a vocal coach. My understanding is that she has actually avoided coaching most of her career due to fears it would change her signature sound. She has alluded to not liking to mix at certain points. I am hoping her perspective on that has changed and that she is working with someone who is helping her have more options. She can easily do a clean mixed belt, probably with an extended belt range, or still go for her pressurized and distorted sounding chest-heavy belts. Some have also said she may have had intermittent periods of habitual alcohol use, no judgments we all have our struggles. If so, I do think those periods showed up in her voice. Her chords sound healthy and flexible right now, whereas in past periods they’ve sounded thickened. Whatever it is, her vocal performance here has some great clarity in tone and texture that she hasn’t demonstrated in a very long time and I’m glad to see it.
