_____ MEET THE KITTIES _____
Mama Cat: Perséphone (Pear). Took her in while pregnant due to a neighbour neglecting her. All black. Has thumbs. Pretty sure she's a dove.
1: Charlie aka sweet baby. All black with no thumbs. A bit shy and loves to hide under the couch.
2: Clawdia (Nibbles). Black and white with a beauty mark. She has thumbs... wouldn't surprise me if she stole them.
3: Harry Houdini (Chunky). Black with a white patch on his chest. Has thumbs. If it's eatable, he will try to eat it. He's a cuddle bug. I can't even go to the bathroom alone.

I Who Have Never Known Men can certainly count again this year, a translation can change everything. I'm not counting rereads in my best books this year, but that's a personal choice. Also, I'm tracking all of my rereads for this year, so they'll get their own attention

I got over my worst reading slump (didn't read anything in over 2 years) thanks to "i who have never know man" and now i've read 6 books this year so far. I also recommend that book to my mom, she almost threw the kindle at me (she loved it tho) and to a friend, who cursed at me after she was done 😂😂, that was at the beginning of the year and both of them tell me that they still think about it from time to time

I don't know if u read "I'm glad my mom died' from Jannette McCurdy yet, but it was definetly one of my favorites this year. Such an interesting and emotional read, even if u never watched something by the actress before (lot of trigger warnings tho)

I love North and South and read it at least every year or two! The romance is very subtle. If you reread it, you can definitely see the signs.
Also, this is probably my favorite book that was adapted into a tv series. They did a lovely job!

1. Best book you’ve read so far in 2023.
The Neptune Project by Polly Holyoke. I read it during Middlegrade March. Amazing, sci-fi dystopian with talking dolphins. What else would you need?😉

2. Best sequel you've read so far in 2023.
It's a tie between The True Love Experiment by Christina Lauren and The Fires of Vengeance by Evan Winter.

3. New release you haven't read yet, but want to.
I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself by Marisa Crane

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year.
Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo

5. Biggest disappointment.
Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James. This book was too vulgar for me, and I had to DNF it.

6. Biggest surprise.
Direction of the Road: A Story by Ursula K. Le Guin. My book club was doing a theme of "reading from an unexpected perspective." This 19-page story was told from the perspective of a tree. I tried to fit in one more story before I had to attend the meeting. I didn't expect to give a 19-page story 5 stars, nor have it stick with me the way it has, but my goodness. I need to read more books by her.

7. Favourite new author. (Debut or new to you)
Camille Baker. I read her Have We Met? duology and loved it. I will gladly pick up anything else she chooses to put out.

8. Newest fictional crush.
Death, aka Suzie from Reincarnation Blues by Michael Poore

9. Newest favourite character.
Perihelion aka, ART from Artificial Condition and Network Effect in The Murder Bot Diaries

10. Book that made you cry.
The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren

11. Book that made you happy.
Let's Play Dead by Sheila Connolly

12. Most beautiful book you've bought so far this year (or received).
I recently bought Owlflight by Mercedes Lackey & Larry Dixon from a library sale. Gorgeous!

13. What books do you need to read by the end of the year?
The Mark of Zorro by Johnston McCulley

The leaf on that pretty book cover looks like a Ginko tree leaf to me. (Just colored fun colors instead of the natural green. Ginko turns yellow in the fall.)

I found A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking to be so wonderful! It's middle grade, but still has Kingfisher's trademark dark humor and while at times ridiculous, it's also quite moving.

T. Kingfisher is one of my all time favorites! My favorites are her books from her World of the White Rat series (Saint of Steel and Clocktaur War series), but you really can’t go wrong with any of her books. ❤

Hey Emily, have you heard of the book The Eternal Return of Clara Hart? It is a time loop book with a premise similar to 7 and a half deaths of evelyn hardcastle! Came out last year I think.

Happy Place bugged the crap out of me too! I DNF'd about halfway. That was my first Emily Henry....and my last.

I felt the same about The Change--great start, starts to drag toward the middle. I sadly didn't make it through, but I love the premise so much. We need more older women heroes!

I don’t think reading a book in a different language is cheating. It’s a different experience. When I was in high school, we watched Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et Le Bête, or something like that) in French class. It was so much better than the English version and I am a native English speaker.

Easily best and most crying is "Alone with you in the Ether". Best sequel is "Day of Fallen Night". That probably wins prettiest cover, too. Biggest disappointment is "When Women Were Dragons". It was only okay and I was expecting a LOVE based on the concept. Oh I also really want to read "The Fourth Wing" and I can't wait for "Bookshops and Bonedust". Jane Austen's "Northhanger Abbey" and "Sense and Sensibility" both made me so happy. This is my first foray into Austen's works and I was kicking my feet with excitement about how soap opera and clever and fun they were. I was so surprised! Can't wait to read more. Oh another big surprise is "Carrie Soto is Back". Borrowed it from the library and I wish I had my own copy. I was shocked that a book about a tennis star struck me so much in the feels. 🌼
