What? The SFA fits perfectly in a 30 liter backpack, also it's made for limbing and chopping small trees, for these purposes it's absolutely perfect and that's what's made for, but it works very well for splitting smaller logs also and you'll get a 20 years warranty of the axe head, so no complaining in the swedisch steel.
For me it's the most versatile and transportable axe out there, so buy a SFA if you want something great.

My only gripe with the SFA is that I prefer my axes to have more wedge (like you pointed out in the video). Apart from that, I prefer my axe to be outside and I love the shape and feeling of the SFA. Even the length I feel fine for a "carry" axe (and I'm 6, 2" and 240 😀).
Enjoy the woods man! 🙂

Council Tool 24" Pak Axe is the way to go!

I can’t disagree but I do think the heat treating varies on the SFA and that is the affect on how robust the bit is. I’ve had my SFA for years and tons of use. Never an issue in the Adirondacks of Northern NY.

Nice comparison and fare as well.

I have almost all of the Gransfors axes. I just got their splitting axe. I use all of them. I use the crap out of the splitting axe, but my go-to axe is the Cold Steel Trail Boss. I use it for everything. It takes a nasty edge. I'll limb an entire 80 foot tree with it. I clear trails with it. It's light enough to strap on my pack. I just got my 11 and 13 year old one a few weeks ago. You should review one. Heck I'll send you one.

I guess I’m confused to me axes are like cars or trucks. Some people buy a car for the price some for the prestige same with trucks. Most nowadays will get you from point A to point B. It’s all in the view of the buyer I bought my GFBSF back when they cost just 100 dollars. Still expensive back then it fits in my canoe pack and with my saw it does everything I want it to. Not trying to deforest the woods and not spending hours splitting rounds of wood. But the thing I enjoy is the way it looks and feels. I have a double bladed axe for big work and a Sears hatchet which works great. So I guess there should a tag on each tool that says Your Mileage May Vary. Would I buy a GFB today probably not simply because of the price there are plenty of axes or hatches out there now that have the look I like and good steel lot cheaper.

Interesting thoughts, I’m still chewing on some of it.

GB is playing a little bit of a dangerous game, the higher their prices get the more accessible it is for somebody to purchase an ax from a small scale maker like Liam Hoffman, or an even smaller scale blacksmith, like I’m doing now.

From what I’ve seen Liam Hoffman’s axes are still double or triple the price of even the more spendy GB, then factor in the wait times and auction prices just to have the option to buy.

I don’t necessarily think Hoffman uses a better quality steel, but I do believe he sets up his axes much better. For instance, modern GB axes often come out of the factories with a knife edge 15° bevel. That’s going to chip even in soft woods, but in my Georgia hardwoods that axe has no chance.

Despite making some videos that I’ve been critical of GB, they still do make a heck of an axe.

You're killing me.
I just put a deposit on a Hoffman Saddle Axe. 6 to 8 months wait.
I didn't even know about Hoffman, so thank you and curse you 😂😂

Tuatahi Trapper would be a better alternative to the Gransfors Bruk

You can give an inexperienced guy a $220 GB "Small Forest Axe" & he'll make it look like a $15 axe from Harbor Freight, then you can give an experienced guy a $15 Harbor Freight axe & he'll make it look like the $220 GB small forest axe..

GB make bigger axes. I don't understand this argument. The 19 inch is like a large hatchet.

People never trusted “mystery meat” and as snobby as the knife and outdoors community is about their steel, it’s amazing they speak so highly of “mystery steel”
