This is great. I've never even heard of a mock french seam before. I think I really like it since you don't have to use fancy math to get the allowances right.

This make so much more sense!

Trying to read instructions in sewing manuals just don’t do it for me. So thank you! No more ribbon binding for me.

Okay, serious question here. Instead of 'sewing 3/8th of an inch from the edge and then trimming to 1/4 inch, ' why not just sew 1/4 inch from the edge in the first place? If you then go on to sew the FINAL seam at 3/8th of an inch from the edge you will still use 5/8th of an inch for your TOTAL seam allowance, still have the first seam allowance fully enclosed by the second seam, AND you won't have to trim anything. Is there some advantage to doing it your way that I haven't seen? Am I missing something?

Oh my God you're a life saver. For some reason, whenever I'd see or read a tutorial, I wouldn't understand it but I finally get it thanks to you!

I've watched a lot of videos about finishing seams, but this is the only one I've come across showing the mock French seam.
Very helpful; thank you.

I really can't overstate how many tutorials for french seams I've watched this week trying to find one that made sense before I delve into a chiffon project. Finally I remembered that when I watched the "sewing with chiffon" video you mentioned other techniques. It's perfect! I understood it, and I'm not afraid of what's been touted as an advanced technique. Thank you!

Thanks so much for sharing this and for keeping it posted! I knew there had to be a way to give the look of a French seam without actually doing the French seam. (French seams are not possible on most of what I'm currently sewing, but I prefer the look to the zigzagging the designer recommended.)

It's a Husqvarna Lily 540. I don't think it's still available though because I bought it over 10 years ago. Husqvarnas are great machines but kind of pricey. Have you tried sandwiching your lightweight fabric between strips of tissue paper as you sew. It really helps for feeding it through the machine easier. And after you finish your seam, you can just rip off the tissue paper. I'm not really a machine expert, but I recommend checking reviews on Overstock. They have some good prices. :)
