HOW TO IMPROVE DRAINAGE WITH CLAY SOIL. 😁

Clay consists of minute mineral particles that tend to cling tightly together. Because there are lots of them they have a big surface area which efficiently hangs on to water and nutrients. Hence clay soils are heavy and wet. Soils with larger particles have more air space and allow the passage of water more freely. So if you can make the soil particles in a clay soil larger you improve drainage and texture.

When improving drainage with clay soil it should always be done with a coarse horticultural grit instead of the Horti grits you find with sand mixed in; the sand element will make the clay soil worse. 👎🏼

On extremely heavy, solid clay adding grit to the ground in autumn can be very effective, especially if it is spread on the soil surface with copious amounts of organic matter such as Corkers green compost or Corkers mushroom compost. Again, if the soil is rough dug and left in large lumps, the grit and organic matter are spread across the surface, winter wet and frost do the work. The grit gradually sinks into the soil taking the garden compost with it.

That can work but mixing in hay or wood chips or grass clippings or all three is better. They will aerate the soil and keep it loose while composting and enriching the soil at the same time.

Grit added to clay will over time become a solid mass once again, as the clay fills all voids. Compost is your best permanent solution.

@Corker TV  new to your channel, have you got advice on fruit bushes, not trees, I had to cut down a tree, as it broke & became dangerous. But I cut it in one weekend rather then do it over the space of 5 summer, allowing 4 ground settlement to realign & wot have you. Now the clay soil Is wet more oftern thar it used to be as the excess water is no longer needed for the stump that was once a beautiful eucalyptus 🌳tree 🏡 I am also worried about the ground goin through a super wet then dry phase time & time again thus becoming a chance it may effect the foundation that wer 14feet away from the stump.

So u see I wanna put some fruit bushes down to rid the clay pocket & gravelly soil of the water that sits on the surface & would like your expert advice.

Wad hoping u could point me in the right ✅ direction

This only works in slightly elevated beds and even then this isn’t truly effective, you would 4 times the gravel.
But, really in heavy clay you need lots of continuous organic matter, not rock or sand. You can add multi-size gravel/sand once the soil is loosened by organic matter. And then you must alway mulch clay soil and protect it from the Sun, otherwise it gets sun baked.
Sand added to clay is money thrown away.

grits are good. hydrated lime is good for clay soil itself, needs to be thoroughly incorporated.
