His mother died when he was very young, it is his aunt that encouraged him with his art and also helped financially from times to times when he struggled as his father rejected him for having fathered a child with Camille who was a country girl and a model therefore not worthy of the Monet family. He chose Camille and refused his father's blackmail. The house, now the Claude Monet museum was almost totally ran down and if it had not been for the foresight of some generous american visionary philanthropists this house as well as Paul Cezanne's house for that matter, would simply have disappeared, shame on the French ministry of culture... Thank you America.

I am a huge fan of John Singer Sargent's work and the fact that he always made a point to visit Monet when in Paris, even after he had been roundly rejected by the Parisian art crowd for his now (and even then, actually) tame portrait of Madame "X" (Madame Pierre Gautreau), speaks volumes about Sargent's respect for the French master.

Hello Alux. I'd like to add a 17th fact that's very very very important, thant only I or as far as I know only 4 % of Earth's population knows since there may be other people out there who had the same upbringing as me. Being an influential artist and growing up here where I live in New England with video games and comic books but having a best friend who's father is a professional painter. I live in both worlds as a fine artist and cartoonist and search youtube while I do my art for inspiration and watch all sorts of video's about fine art and comic books and the history of comics so this fact hit me like a ton of bricks as something very very special and this seems like a great place to share: Did you know, that for four years on this planet, two people from very different times and very different ages, existed at the same time? Claude Monet the famous then French Impressionist Painter died in 1926 FOUR YEARS after the now very famous American Comic Book writer Stanlee Martin Lieber was born? As a passionate well rounded artist, that just hit me like a ton of elephants.
