Getting your private pilot's license is the first step towards making a career in aviation possible. Some people choose to get their private pilots license and just keep flying as a hobby. And others use it as the first step in a journey like I'm doing and then go on to earn their instrument rating, multi-engine rating, commercial pilot rating, and more!

In this video, I share with you the following:

✅ What involved in getting the PPL
✅ How long does it take
✅ Why now is such a great time to become a pilot
✅ How to choose an instructor / school
✅ The biggest mistakes that people make (cost $$)

Be aware, the clock starts ticking once you pass your written exam. It's good for 2 years and if you dont complete your checkride by then, you have to retake it. I know several people who have done this.

Find the right instructor. Mine took it as a personal challenge to prove wrong an instructor he hated at another airport that he knew was milking the process. He committed to making every hour count. When I went for my FAA check ride I had 39.5 hours, the check ride counted as the 40th hour. This was in 1994 and I paid a grand total back then of $2, 650 to get my license, which I guess would be about $7, 500 now in 2024.

I started my training a little over 3 weeks ago! I’ve been scheduling 3 hours a day and about 8 hours on the weekends! I’m so in love with flying!

Maybe the very best explanation about this topic on the entire web, as a international student about to do my written and check ride for instruments rating, I totally agree with all the points you make on this video, good luck to everybody on your journey to become a pilot and do not let anyone to discourage you from your goal regardless of your age, I will turn 41 in a few months and still going for it ….!!! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

Almost 60 now. In my twenties really considered this profession but nothing back then existed like today in terms of pilots needed and how can the industry attract candidates. Timing is everything.

Thank you sir!
I’m in Los Angeles and your video actually saved me from developing the habit to only flight when I could. I’ll save up a little and when ready, I’ll go in to finish.
Also, thank you for teaching the difference between schools that follow FAA curriculum and others that don’t necessary do. May God bless you and continue to strengthen you.

The best PPL advice on the internet. Only wish I had this video when I was working on my PPL 30 years ago. I fell into more than a few of the traps he outlines. My first mistake was that I didn't run away when my PPL instructor boasted about the coke he did with his girlfriend over the weekend. Went downhill from there, but I did eventually get my PPL with some complements from the DPE.

Im gathering info for my 19 yr old son, I am do grateful I got to this video !! I am from McAllen, Texas, and yes, aviation schools have gone too high in price. My son is a Freshman in College but thanks to this video, I think when it would be better for him to start taking his PPL program. Thank u so much and millions of Blessings!!! 🎉🎉🎉

This video alone is already more than what I learned in my freshman year in Aviation Sciences at Northeast Louisiana University way back in 1978. A 50, 000 dollar degree plan back then quickly became futile. The actual cost was much higher for reasons you just mentioned. I got “the bug” again in the Air Force as an Avionics Instruments specialist. On one occasion I was up in a KC-135 troubleshooting an autopilot bug that was happening in flight. It was a training mission for several new officers to practice maneuvers for refueling but also practice stalls. I got to listen to the instructor guide the students through it all . Hearing the wing buffeting and dropping like a rock and a surprising 3.75 g’s during recovery for 11 hours sticks with me even today. I loved it!
I’m fortunate that I have access to your experience. Aviate, Communicate, Navigate is obviously your calling.

Hi there! I’m a retired corporate pilot with thirty-three years of work history (14, 300 hours in my logbook) and I only wish that I’d had the opportunity in 1966 to plan my flight training as logically as you present it. My college age grandchildren take their familiarization flights sometime soon. I’ve shared this video with them, and I’ll encourage them to check out your website and other online resources. Thanks for a very nicely done introduction to flight training.

I've looked at several other channels on this topic and this is the best organized and most concise channel I've come across to date - thanks Trent!
