In regards to the Titan/Titanic thing, I also wonder if the historical Jesus truly did predict the destruction of the Temple.

It doesn’t mean he’s clairvoyant or a prophet, it just means he had knowledge of it being destroyed before, knew of the tensions between the Jewish people and Rome, and figured “hey, it could happen again”

The Jewish Bible, the New Testament, the Quran, the Book of Mormon: comic bookery.
Children love their stories.

Some appeal to the possibility that the gospels were written soon after the events thst are described but richard carrier has convincing argued that legends can form soon after the events .

Hey Derek, sorry this off-topic — just wanted to make a suggestion to you could look into interviewing James Crossley. He co-authored a new book on the historical Jesus (or Jesus movement as they prefer) that I’m reading and find fascinating. AFAIK getting a very good reception in scholarly circles as well

The hymns. The interesting thing about the hymns is that they could not have been written by Luke. They are too thoroughly Jewish in style and theology that Luke is extremely unlikely to have bene the author. But there is another problem that places them earlier than the writing of the Gospel. It is that they do not reflect anything like the Christological theology of the period after the crucifixion.

The history of Acts. Of course, the history is polished. That implies some time past before the clashes were ironed out and they reached the conclusion we read about in Acts 15.

Do ships sink? Are you kidding? So, the ship sank. The crew and passengers were saved. Does that mean the sinking in Acts mimics the Odyssey? How many other ships sank in between 800 BC and 50 AD? From the recovery of shipwrecks in the Mediterranean there were a lot. There are bound to be some similarities. Remember correlation (echoes) of the stories does not imply that the Odyssey was the causation of the Acts account.

This idea that Luke drew upon Homer has to have more substantial evidence than a random correlation.

Did you see the documentary that Jordan Peterson put out on the Bible today? I’d love to see a response to it!

making parallels when all features are there can be labelled as plagiarism, . but making connections based on words can lead to childish conclusion. seed of a woman, and born of a woman made a big hit in parallel land, from english/german versions, unable to decipher spiritual concepts from physical attributes, making the latter the stepping stone to "memories".

But I still think your missing the point Derek. Luke (the author of) tells you in a generally correct manner what he has done, and the scholarship agrees, he takes mark as a source, Q as a source. He has some understanding of Paul, hes aware that there is a Peter, James and a John.

So the question is this Lukes fiction, or someone elses and is he simply trying to make sense.
1. Does luke invent the birth narrative? Nope Matthew did, and we dont kniw if there were other versions out there.
2. Does luke invent the resurrection account? Nope once again Matthew did.
3. Did luke invent pauls revelation on the road to damscus. Three different versions in Acts, unlikely.
4. Was his account of Peters vision made up? the attested literature suugest Jesus picked a form of persian/greek mysticism and was teaching it.

So is luke a historian - no history as you and i know it did not exist.
So is luke a chuch historian - there was no church, in fact the book of luke was the fitst vestige of what could be called a church.
So is luke a disciple of Paul - no but one of his sources might have been.
Was luke a fiction writer - read what mcDonald said in comparing the Q sources luke tended to be the more primitive of the two.

What is the author of Luke. A scholar who took the varied sources he had and tried to make and overarching story out of them. Its a story, not history, not fiction, its a story that is sibservient to the theology that luke gleams from his study.
