There’s no way that child is ever going to turn out selfish and materialistic with those great lessons she is learning…

You’ll find that pageant/dance moms are often overweight or not in good shape. They pretty much live vicariously through their children and push them so hard. I totally agree with Ken when he said that pageants are some sort of child abuse.

I don’t care how much “fun” the kid is having, if you’re teaching your EIGHT YEAR OLD to suck in their stomach, it’s harming the child in the long run. that’s not a healthy behavior, especially for a kid.

"I judge the beauty of the child, not the shape of the child."

Yeah outer beauty, I remember one episode where there was actually a good pageant mom, as in doesn't force her daughter to do stuff, is very supportive, and doesn't put crack ton of makeup on her daughter, and doesn't waste thousands of dollars on dresses. If I recall she legit said why waste that much money when you can donate it?, I think she either makes the dresses herself or goes to like the thrift store to get them. The dresses were very nice but not as glamorous or sparkly as the more expensive one, but most importantly the daughter actually look like she's having fun. Then in the same episode they show a mom who was a crazy pageant mom like the one in this video, who buys custom made dresses worth thousands dollars or so and multiple ones as well, takes her daughter to the spa to keep her pretty, I think too the mom hired a makeup crew just for her daughter making her look way older.

And guess who won?

The one with the custom made dresses since obviously her dress was the most glamorous of all the girls since her mom spent tons of money on it and makeup too. Despite the girl with the nice pageant mom being the better choice (she was more talented and actually look happy as she perform). The judges say they look for inner beauty or best personality yet they always pick the girls with the most expensive dresses and makeup.

The "If today's your birthday, Happy Birthday" hits different when it's your actual birthday.
Thanks Ken!

I was never in a beauty pageant myself, but the amount of pressure I felt as a 5-15 year old cheerleader was absolutely nuts. The thousands of people watching at competitions, sewing in fake hair, makeup, and 'conditioning' (a fancy word for testing how far kids could go) and the list could go even further. Luckily I'm aware as an adult of how my mother was living through me, but as a kid I grew up with such high expectations for myself and I needed to look a certain way. I can't imagine what half of these kids are going through and I can only hope the children's pageants died off now.

As someone who's had acrylics, you gotta buff the natural nail first so the nail base they use stays easier. When you get those puppies off your nails will feel like damn paper they're so flimsy and thin. It can really damage a kid's nails since they aren't fully developed :<

In my opinion, pagents at this age is 100% child abuse. There should be an undercover CPS worker at every pagent show.

I have a nephew who was treated like this by his mom growing up, he was in dance. Whenever he would finish a performance we would all compliment him and tell him what a good job he did. He would have a huge grin on his face until he saw his mom glaring at him because she thought he messed something up. Then he would go home and cry. Every show.

I like how these episode starts are becoming show and tells more and more.
Buff: "This is my water bottle"
Ken: "I got this massage gun"
Buff: "And this my other... *fancier* water bottle"

This mom is creating the perfect recipe for her daughter to have an eating disorder. It’s borderline abusive.

You know you failed as a mom when your 8 yr old daughter wants to win money to fix the gate and be a better adult.

My mom took me to one pageant when I was six. She just put me in a nice dress, rolled my hair up, then put lip gloss on me. Neither of us knew what we were getting ourselves into. I tried to befriend the other girls, but couldn't get them to talk to me. I even asked my mom why were some girls crying and why were their moms yelling at them. She couldn't really tell me at the time, even though she knew why. That was the last time she took me to a pageant.

I fully buy the "why you buying all these dresses" statement from the little girl. Her mom is probably constantly complaining about money problems and then putting things off like fixing the fence. When kiddo said she'd spend the reward money on the fence if she won, it gave me parentification vibes. Her mom is definitely the kid in their dynamic and it's sad. This poor girl is going to have more than body issues.

I always feel so bad for the kids. The idea of perfect they're going to reach for in life must be exhausting.

Ken doesn’t like the pageants because it rattles his inner defensive dad.

I was in pageants from 3-12 and honestly it was really fun. My mom was super low key about it though. It was a hobby not a form of income. If I didn’t want to do a specific pageant we didn’t go. Win or lose my mom always made me feel like I won. I gained a lot of self confidence from it and my family would always come and watch. It also helped me to be ok with losing which I think is important. When I decided I wanted to play softball instead she wasn’t mad or even sad about it. I don’t think pageants are bad but when it stops being about the kid and is only about winning that’s when it gets crazy.
