After Eight Years, This Futuristic Electric Car is Back!

Long before the Tesla Model S or Nissan LEAF, an ultra-efficient vehicle called the Aptera 2-e (and its series hybrid sibling, the 2-h) was enjoying a lot of public attention.

It promised to be the most fuel-efficient vehicle ever, was featured on many a magazine front cover, and even got a cameo role in the 2009 Star Trek film.

But by 2011, Aptera was no more, its assets sold onto Chinese buyers.

Now it's back, and, with its original IP now firmly in the hands of the original engineering team, it's ready to take on the automotive industry again. This time however, with ten years of improvements in engineering and battery designs behind it. Now, it's claiming 1,000 miles per charge.

It's an engineering marvel. It's super-efficient. And very futuristic. We love it -- but will it succeed where it failed last time?

I've been waiting for this news for a decade. I hope they are successful this time.

I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I followed it's development in the early years with great anticipation.

I was a fan then, and I'm a fan now. Here's to their success!!!

Originally was going to go for the all electric version back then. Now with vastly superior battery tech it can go so much further. So tempting if I can get one.

I think this could be a hit in the UK where there is a history of 3 wheelers.

Glad the Aptera is back as I was also having high hopes for the Elio but that faded away fast sadly. Hope they can go mainstream with outlets across the country.

Now that is a car to my taste. I urgently need to know more about it!

I was an early adopter back then. I deposited $500 and got it back when they went under. With many other electric cars available these days, I will never look back at this Aptera. I am happy with my Kona EV. Aptera doesn't look safe. Shaping like an egg, if it get into an accident and those flimsy front wheel break off, you will be rolling. It doesn't take much for those front wheel to get sheared off in an accident. That's why the DOT never approve Aptera due to safety. Back then, I was so much into model airplanes and loved the looks of anything that resemble an airplane. After 16 years of building and flying RC model airplanes, I got tire and moved on.

I would love one. We only need two seats and a good range so it would be ideal.

Just shows how far we've come since the mid-2000s: many EVs now surpass the X-prize's >100 mpge. Heck, even my 2016 e-Golf gets 116 mpge. There's probably a market for three-wheelers with super long range -- but a very small one. Look at what happened to the Venture One: many, many people were hoping that would pan out but it didn't happen, not even as an ICE variant. As Nikki pointed out in a recent TEN video, most of us do not really need an EV with a 300-mile range -- and the obsession with range is holding us back. Most people would be quite surprised at how a 150-mile EV would fulfill almost all their driving needs. We could fix our mobility vs environment issues with mid-range EVs as daily drivers, short-term rentals of long-range EVs for the few long trips most of us make each year -- and bikes, buses, and walking.

I would love one, it perfectly suits my needs. Just before they closed they took on some execs from the auto industry. I often wondered if that was significant.
