The Fall of the Babylonian Empire

The fall of Babylon is a historical event that occurred in 539 BC. This event saw the conquest of Babylon by the Achaemenid Empire under Cyrus the Great and marked the end of the Neo-Babylonian Empire. The fall of Babylon is reported by a number of ancient sources, including the Cyrus Cylinder, the Greek historian Herodotus, as well as a number of books in the Old Testament.

The city of Babylon is located in modern day Iraq and its history stretches back to the 3rd millennium BC, when it was a small port town on the Euphrates River. At that time, Babylon was part of the Akkadian Empire. Over time, the town would grow and develop into one of the most important cities in ancient Mesopotamia . It was during the 18th century BC that Babylon became a major power in the region under the rule of the Amorite king, Hammurabi.

Over time the Kingdom would become weakened by decline and other growing empires and kingdoms would attempt to conquer and destroy its power such as the Assyrians and the Hittites.

Following the death of Ashurbanipal around 627 BC, civil war broke out in the Neo-Assyrian Empire, causing it to weaken. Many subjects of the Neo-Assyrian Empire seized this opportunity to revolt. One of these was a Chaldean chief by the name of Nabopolassar, who formed an alliance with the Medes, Persians, Scythians, and Cimmerians. This coalition succeeded in destroying the Neo-Assyrian Empire.

Having gained independence from the Assyrians, Nabopolassar established the Neo-Babylonian Empire, with Babylon as its capital. When he died, he left his son with immense stores of wealth and a strong Babylonian city. This ruler set the groundwork for the impressive Neo-Babylonian Empire, leaving his son Nebuchadnezzar II with the ideal circumstances to bring Babylonia to the forefront of ancient society. And that is exactly what the son did.

The Neo-Babylonian Empire reached its zenith during the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II. During Nebuchadnezzar II’s reign, which lasted until around 562 BC, the Neo-Babylonian Empire was in control of Babylonia, Assyria, parts of Asia Minor, Phoenicia, Israel, and northern Arabia.

Nebuchadnezzar II is most remembered today for a handful of important acts. Firstly, he is documented for driving the Jews out of Babylon, capturing the city of Jerusalem in 597 BC, and destroying the First Temple and that city in 587 BC. He is also generally credited with the construction of two major features of Babylon - the Ishtar Gate in 575 BC and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, which are considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. There is, however, some contention if Nebuchadnezzar II can really receive recognition for creating the Hanging Gardens.

The beginning of this video is ripped off verbatim from the Knowledge Is Power YT channel video about the fall of Babylon. Exact same script.

What’s that about?

5:19 When did Nebuchadnezzar drive the out the Jews in Babylon? I thought he moved the Jews into Babylon, is that not right? Wasn't it the Persians who later facilitated the return of the Jews back to Judea?

The archeological evidence of the hanging gardens seems to be that this was a construct of the Neo Assyrian empire at Nineveh and after the conquest of the Neo Assyrians, the area of Nineveh became part of the Neo Babylonian empire. The hanging gardens were never in the city of Babylon. The evidence is on relief carvings from Nineveh at the British Museum and the evidence on the ground at the site where a river was partially diverted for a water supply to Nineveh, with inscriptions in Cuneiform and Aramaic on a mountainside there. It is these inscriptions that permitted a breakthrough in the translations of Cuneiform tablets all over Mesopotamia, the Hittites and even to the Amana tablets, in Egypt.

Achaemenid Empire is a true spiritual and the greatest Empire in the history of the world and some historians say that if Cyrus The Great wouldn't had happened then maybe there would have been be no Christianity and Judaism in the world

Could do with a bit of an Epilogue. It’s not as if Babylon ceased to be an important city under the Achaemenids or Alexander. It presumably lost large amounts of population to Ctesiphon and by the time of the founding of Baghdad was just a small town, right?

Babylon had outlying colonies including the arabian peninsula. But Babylon didn't die. Its colonies reconstituted its in the first century ad. It persists to the present.

In ancient history and old testament what you have called Israel in the video it was called Palestine. Jerusalem was in Judah kingdom but not Israel. The same Jewish people taken by Nabokidnazzer army to Babylon as slaves, they had been reached by the Persians predecessors from Kingdom of Korush and made an agreement to open the strong gates of Babylon after every one will be drunk in the night of a national festival, and so it happened, the long siege on Babylon did not succeed but treason did, that is why they entered withoutca fight and when they entered the destroyed, burned, killed, and wiped out the civilization. The deal between Persians and Jews was from West bank of Euphrates until Egypt this is Isreal dream, and from East bank of Euphrates to middle Asia this is the dream of Persians. And forever they are allies.

I've found it very interesting, although i dont know if there is a legit connection with etymology or whatever.. that Sin, the god(dess?, ive seen things referring to Nanna Sin) of the moon, which is so deeply connected to womanhood, is also a word used in christianity for transgressions against their god(usually man-coded, or outright said to be a father/man). that women are the original "sin"ner, and the night, the moon, the blood of women is demonized/othered.. it really feels like a red pill/ propaganda reveal to me.
