Your answer is "Just never start your car again" unless it is 150 degrees outside. Thanks for the help. I have a remote start, so I don't even have to know how cold it is outside before I start it. I'll just pretend it's warm and tell everyone it is warm, kind of like when you told us when it is colder than normal operating temperatures a car emits as much pollution as a car driving 300 miles. See, I can lie too!

I wanted to know what a cold start was not how it pollutes the air

A (single?) cold start produces more emissions than a car traveling 300 miles? I'm calling BS.

UCAIR, I need to cold start my vehicle to get to all of these alternative modes of transportation, save for walking 2 miles in the freezing weather to the nearest bus stop. Even then, I have to begin walking to the bus stop at 5:30 am in order to catch it, spend 30 mins on the bus to get to the front runner, wait 15 mins in the freezing weather again at the station for the train to arrive, then sit on the train for 1 hour and 15mins to travel from Provo to SLC, wait outside in the cold again at the bus station in SLC for about 10 mins, sit on the bus again for 30 mins to drive through the city, and then finally arrive at work. That’s nearly 3 hours of commute time going one way, making my daily commute time in the winter at least 6 hours! After going through all this hassle, is it no wonder why people would rather opt to cold start their vehicles and live with the inversion. The solution is not to drive less cars. The solution is to plant more trees throughout the Wasatch front to help clean the air, because the cars and the people are not going away.

Where is your source coming from that a cold start creates the same amount of emissions as a 300 mile trip?

Lady: Cold starts are bad so you should walk to work in really cold weather to stop pollution

Me: screw that, in pa it gets cold

I was just looking for something educational now I’m getting told that starting a car engine at any temperature even vaguely below the operating temperature produces as much carbon emissions as driving 300, how is that even physically possible? And what engine was that measured on cause I’m pretty sure a lot of guidelines state that the engine in question is both illegal and incredibly inefficient

I usually put a blow dryer over my engine to make sure its nice and warm. If anything I might use a bucket of hot water.

At some point, you gotta start your car. Can't leave it on in the driveway 24/7.

That's interesting and good to know.

However I think many people who park outside especially are waiting for the windshield to clear before attempting to drive. If you don't give it a few minutes you won't be able to see as you drive!
