Steller's Jay Calling

Steller's Jays singing and squawking on a beautiful morning in the Squamish River Estuary. As vocal as they are, Steller's Jays are quite hard to film usually. It seems they're always on the move and under the cover of branches. When I filmed the first half of this video, I was quite excited that I finally filmed one out in the open. Then I walked for a couple of minutes and filmed what would be the second half of the video! And for some extra fun, I filmed a northern flicker calling out shortly after this:

I’ve been obsessed with these guys after seeing one out my window one morning a few days ago, and this made me happy

Even if you don't know that this is them, pretty much everyone who lives in the rural Pacific Northwest is intimately familiar with all of these sounds.

I was tutoring science when my young friend said "What does a Steller's Jay" sound like? We went right to Youtube and found your video. Thank you so much for teaching us both!

I use to pass by a stellar jays nest every morning on my walk to work when I lived in Anchorage, AK would always fly over to squak at me and investigate who or what I was lol

They are pretty elusive, aren't they? I remember trying to take a picture of these beauties on vacation in California when we rode down the Pacific Coast Highway and stopped at a national park. Where I'm from, we have blue jays, and I can't tell which one is more beautiful. But, I appreciate them both for their vibrant colors and their intelligence.

Up here in the Rockies of Colorado, we get these jays that have white “exclamation points” above their eyes. They are really smart. They see me coming out to put peanuts on the tree shelf and they start calling back and forth.
I’ve heard them imitate an eagle screaming before —to scare the other birds off of a food source. Clever little birds.

best colorful birds that came to stay here when 9 11 happened ! while planes were rushed to land at multiple airports around this planet . best birds so kind to visit how fine to see your past vid, thank you for posting an amazing bird and eagle soaring their strength over the skies while Stella jays were not bothered ! nature is to be respected of its knowledge.

Love the sounds of nature, especially birds singing in spring. They signal winter's gone for good :) Unfortunately lately hardly any snow falls here, winter without snow is not much fun. Beautiful video!
