don't cut the wall first when making a patch out of sheetrock or gypsum. make the sheetrock patch, outline it on the wall, and then cut past the outline a bit and it will fit perfectly without measuring

What if the hole is around an inch? It seems a bit excessive to put an entire new patch of drywall on a hole that size.

how is this process different if you have textured walls? Do you use the drywall patch, and smooth out the compound, and after that dries, use joint compound again texture it over the patch, prime, then paint? I have not seen how to do this with textured walls. Thanks.
