And even after serving for 24 years, he went on to spend 12 years working in congress for veterans . Fighting for better healthcare for returning servicemen.

In today's speech in California, Tim Walz thanked Vance for his service. Walz is a class act. Vance is not.

He didn’t “drop out” of the army….HE RETIRED!

My father served in Vietnam. He was born in a bomb shelter in England during WW2. He was not a fortunate son.
At the end of my father’s life, we learned the truth about his service in the Air Force. He was in a plane shot down in enemy territory. He was the only one who managed to bail out. He ran into the wreckage of the plane and saw all his comrades dead. He took whatever supplies he could, then spent six weeks running through the jungle, avoiding the Vietcong. He was not captured. He managed to return to an American Base Camp. He arrived with dysentery, jungle rot, malaria and a massive case of PTSD. He was shipped back to the States. He received a medal for his courage and determination to survive. Anyone who knows about the Vietnam war knows how incredible it is that my father lasted over six weeks alone, without being captured, while he was also violently ill with multiple infectious diseases.
My dad was unable to tell us his story because, in addition to the medal for heroism, a silver star, he was also given a diagnosis of schizophrenia and a medical discharge. That diagnosis became part of his permanent record. He almost left this country for New Zealand because he had no support from the military and he had extreme difficulty finding employment. He threw his Silver Star in the East River, “with the rest of the rubbish.” He was a naturalized American Citizen, who probably did go to Vietnam in place of some “fortunate son.” He did his best to avoid being drafted, trying to prove he was a conscientious objector, and finally signed up to avoid the anxiety of being drafted. When my father’s younger brother was drafted, my dad joined up, in part, to keep an eye on his brother; the other motivation was that he knew it was only a matter of time before he would be drafted himself.

My father and my uncle were both everything Trump rants about in his meandering bullshit speeches.

I have issues with the military and how many veterans were given diagnoses similar to the one given to my dad, simply so the military didn’t have to pay for their ongoing medical treatment. I would never dare to question anyone’s service record. I have a very dear friend who went to the Naval Academy but never saw active duty.
I might disagree with how Veterans were treated after the war, but I do not doubt their service.

My dad was only able to start dealing with his PTSD in the early 21st century, shortly before he died, but decades after he served and was given a Silver Star and a “ok please fuck off now, ” from the military. I also know he was hardly the only man given a diagnosis that meant the VA was not expected to provide them with ongoing treatment. The justification that he had gone to Vietnam with a “unknown, pre-existing condition.” That assessment was of course complete bullshit, (as it was for so many other Vets, ) so the government would not have to pay for the long term care they needed after serving in Vietnam.

After 24 years Walz had every right to retire.

Since my dad and his family settled in Queens in the early 1950’s, it’s entirely possible that either my uncle or my father were one of the five men who went to Vietnam instead of Trump.

I was born in Manhattan and grew up in the NYC metropolitan area. I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t aware of Donald Trump, through his face plastered on tabloid magazines in the markets, and regular mentions of him on the local nightly news from Manhattan. I was probably around ten or so when I had reached the conclusion Trump was a self-obsessed asshole.

Marine Sgt and Iraq vet here. Vance is trash. He's a bad Marine. Anyone who questions another's military service and especially uses the term "stolen valor" without bringing receipts is a coward and shows a lack of integrity. Walz served honorably and with integrity. It makes me furious. Vance should publicly apologize immediately.

As someone from Ohio, I hate JD Vance so much. He literally wrote a BS memoir saying he grew up poor. His mom was a nurse and he lived in a 4bdrm house in the damn suburbs. The man is a walking grifter.

What a liar! He was NEVER “asked to go.” He Made plans to retire before he knew he was going to be deployed soon. He knew that his company could be deployed within two years, but that’s it. And he had every right to retire. He put in 24 years. He was also a teacher and he decided he wanted to run for Congress.

Minnesota National Guard issued a written statement clarifying that Walz could not have known, at the time he retired, that his unit would soon be sent to Iraq.

Vance recently went after a general who earned 4 purple hearts and a medal of valor. He doesn't respect anyone.

Give Vance some credit - for making sure every veteran votes against the Republican draft dodger and this dishonorable disgrace!

JD worked 4 years as a correspondent. And yes he went overseas.
Tim Walz served for 24 years, reaching the highest rank an enlisted man can, E9. He served for almost two and a half decades very honorably. JD Vance should be ashamed of himself.

Outstanding! 🇺🇸
Walz served 20 years, retired, 9/11 happened, and went back for another 4 years. Then he served as a teacher. And then served as a Congressman (where he pushed for Veterans rights) and then served as Governor. A life of service! And he never messed with a couch! 😂
