Can I unlock it with my photo? Face ID vs Windows Hello vs Samsung Facial Recognition

How safe are facial recognition systems on various devices? In this video, I try to fool the iPad Pro with FaceID, the Razerblade with Windows Hello, and the Galaxy S21 Ultra with its facial recognition. The results are fascinating!

I have informed the manufacturer whose device failed to recognize my real face.

I used Samsungs for years and never used facial recognition. I used the fingerprint scanner. When I bought an iPhone I was like no it only has Face ID but it’s been amazing. With glasses, gloves, a mask, even the dark

As a 2d person, I find this feature very offensive!

Print out a physical picture and tape it to a mannequin head.

Thank you so much for your video Adam, You are a great reviewer and you do your job perfectly well. I feel so bad to see so many people being rude to you in the commentaries, you do not deserve this, congratulations you're awesome.

The simple explanation for why Samsungs face unlock is garbage is because it used the front facing cam and compares what it sees to a 2d image of your face it has saved. Whereas windows yellow and Face ID read your face in depth 3d and is impossible to trick.

Was the iPad seeing glare obscuring parts of the picture? That's a pretty bright light pointed at a pretty glossy screen.

I had a 3d printed verson of my face that I created using the faceid dept camera, it doesn't fool the faceid, and windows hello sees that it is a face it just says it doesn't recognize it as me. i dont own a samsung device to test on.

Fun fact: IR cameras are not able to capture visible spectrum of light. So Face ID didn't even know that there was a picture or something being displayed on the Mac!

i really would have preferred if you used the laptop for all devices but yeah, results were as expected.

Yeah, you always know it's a convenience feature only and not very secure if there's no IR sensor. However, I wish both mac and windows would have an option to do this without an IR sensor in situations where you don't need extreme security.

I actually don't care, I've always preferred fingerprint unlock. But if Samsung's phones can be fooled so easily, they just shouldn't have facial unlock. Just ditch it until it's secure.

Critical flaw to your test, you used a screen to show the picture. An actual large printed headshot needs to be tested, partly because how electronics "see" a screen (If you ever have tried to record a CRT tv back in the day and saw distortion, you'll know what I mean) and also a photo can be bowed outwards to provide the depth you mentioned it requires.

My OnePlus never accepts any photos for facial recognition and neither does my Mi smartphone. I don't know what's wrong with Samsung which advertises itself as more secure.

I just bought the S21 FE model SM-G990W 2 and it has a proximity sensor. It is listed in the manual, but the S21 and S21 ultra manual does not list it. Wonder if this makes facial recognition more secure?

I feel like it would work if u turned down the brightness on the iPad because when u try to take a Pic of a bright screen, it's difficult to focus on the screen

Samsung really shot themself in the foot. The S9 had it all. The fingerprint scanner on the back exactly where your pointer finger was so you could easily unlock it while grabbing it out of your pocket and was ready before you were. There was a pressure sensitive home button that you could hard press while full screen so you didn't have to do an unnecessary swipe before going home. It had Iris detection for secure facial recognition and that with the camera and earpiece were crammed above the screen for an uninterrupted screen Then, Samsung got the brilliant idea to replace the pressure sensitive home button for a less conveniently placed fingerprint scanner, remove iris detection, and put a punch in the screen thats less offensiflve then Apple's notch, but worse than they had before. None of the sensors were too efficient, but if they worked at it, I'm sure by now they'd have the best setup that no one could come close to.

At least Xiaomi is honest about this, before apply this option, it warns that someone can open your phone with your photo 😂

Windows hello is gold standard because it can't be fooled by twins
