💬 LESSON DESCRIPTION:
I have a very practical lesson for you today.
I just want to share with you the exact warm up guitar exercise that I do almost every single time that I practice.
Sounds a bit boring, but this warm up is really important to me.
I injured my arm from playing too much guitar twice in my career.
Both times were devastating.
There were moments when I wasn't sure if I'd be able to play again.
In the end, the answer to healing and being able to play sustainably again was warming up.
I found that this exact warm up guitar exercise helped the most in getting me loose, preventing further injury, and allowing me to play with way more accuracy.
I still do it religiously and it continues to be beneficial.
Here's what's covered in this lesson:
• I describe the warm up guitar exercise and demonstrate it fully with tabs and notation on screen
• I talk about what to focus on while practicing
• I show how to turn it into a more advanced exercise
• And lastly, I share the common technique mistake that you should avoid doing at all costs when playing something like this
I don't even mention my injuries in the video—I just wanted to share that with you here. I'll save discussing that more for a future lesson.

dude your teaching style is top-notch, I love the emphasis on staying relaxed. Recovering from tendonitis and watching your content (including the video about that subject) has helped so much.

I've been doing this warm up for the past couple of days now and I can definitively say that this is the best warm up I've ever done.

Nice, this is a great method you use. I've been using variations of this technique for years while warming up. Builds good dexterity and accuracy too.

Great warm up exercise - thank you. The most challenging part (for me) of the exercise is to memorize the order of the permutations: it was not straightforward to see the rule behind it immediately (you call it "logic" - but there are various possibilities how to order the 24 permutations "logically") - finally I got it 🙂

Thank you, the best guitar lesson channel on YouTube, in my opinion. You show you really like enjoy teaching guitar. The exercises really do help for control of the fretboard.

Thanks for posting this! I will definitely try to work this into my practice sessions as you know I have had wrist issues due to bad posture and neck strangling. 🙄

Jared, great lesson. Can you discuss the type of arm injury you had from playing the guitar too much. I am suffering from Ulnar Nerve Entrapment which is causing numbness in left forearm. Seeking information on cause and treatment. Also, how to avoid it in the future. If you or any of your subscribers have any information, I would appreciate it. It will help me and many others. Thanks.

I've used this exercise pattern with my beginner students, however, thirds are great exercises to use with finger dexterity.

Thank you, Jared - do you recommend an equivalent for keyboard or piano or do you happen to know a teacher like you for keyboard | piano? - Zach

some guy mentioned this same warmup, in highschool it kept him thinking all the time coming up with new patterns in that 4 finger structure and he posted all of them which were about 16...so i'm definitely getting better but still struggling getting the short pinky there.
