In this HVAC Training Video, I show How to Add R-410A into a Running Air Conditioner that is Very Low on Refrigerant. I Show the Step by Step Procedure for Connecting the Hoses and Manifold Gauges, Air Purging, Charging Process, Digital Scale Use, the Subcooling Method, Total Superheat Method, What Happens to the Pressures and Temperatures as Refrigerant is Added, How to Charge the Refrigerant from the Hoses Back into the System, and How to Disconnect the Gauge Set! Supervision is needed by a licensed HVACR Tech while performing tasks as Experience and Apprenticeship garners Wisdom and Safety.

Signed up for the HVAC program at my local community College and it starts in only a month, got my textbooks and been reading ahead and watching these videos is very helpful.
I already understand the basic refrigeration cycle so thats pretty cool

I had to pause the video to say Thank you! I’ve encountered several so called teachers whom seem burnt out or miserable. Even co workers whom just do t want to teach as well as to learn. Thank you for instilling Sense of confidence in your viewers, I’ve purchased your book look forward to your new videos. You are making a difference in peoples lives.

I can’t understand why your “soup-to-nuts” video got about 1.6M views and this one only has about 52K (as of Aug 1 ‘22). I’ve only had your 229 page book for 10 days but that book used together with your videos is obviously the best way to learn HVAC. I’m planning on buying a 12000 btu inverter heat pump and a 12000 btu cooling only split unit just for the purpose of experimenting with all the different recovery and charging methods you described just to compare the outcomes.
It will probably cost a few thousand to get all the good tools to do all that but it’s definitely worth it.

PRICELESS!! I've been looking for a video on how to charge an R410A system and I finally found it, step by step. Craig, thanks for sharing your knowledge.

This video brings some nostalgic feelings... This analog pressure gauge from Yellow Jacket.... Last time I've used mine was a couple of years ago. Nowadays it is easier just to get a digital gauge with temperature probes that would calculate superheat and sub cooling automatically..:) Thank you!

Is it weird that I never watch regular TV anymore. Just Hvac Youtube videos. Lol. Great info. Thanks for sharing. I love this channel. At 55 I still love learning from great teachers like Craig.

You have been blessed to have the knowledge you have and more importantly the ability to communicate it in a way that’s easy to understand.
I have been watching and learning from your videos and it has inspired me to take the 608 exam which I passed and now hold the universal certification from the EPA to legally purchase refrigerant.
Thank you Craig for sharing your knowledge and expertise with all of us.
Ps: your books are awesome- I reference them frequently.

This was an excellent training video on how to charge a system with 410a using the subcooling method!!

Any help appreciated :
I have a Lenox Unit outside with 410A refrigerant. I'm following these instructions to top off the refrigerant as I know it has a tiny leak and goes low every couple years. the sticker on the condensing unit outside doesn't show any TXV subcooling number. it shows the design pressure though : Hi 446 / Lo 236 PSIG besides voltage, amperage, fan speed and other information. How am I supposed to figure what the target subcooling of this unit should be.
PS : I have my EPA license and will eventually replace the unit probably next year.

GREAT VIDEOS btw, very valuable information on youtube videos and the e-book. really appreciate you for what you're doing and always support you

They teach us to use the compressor to purge the manifold/hoses on pumpdown. Close the liquid line, wait for it to kick off on low pressure and it should suck the last vapour (or at least as much as possible) out of your hoses.

Question, On a 5 ton system, ballpark, how long would it take to put in 14 pounds of r410a?

The Noise! 😮 sounds like a video game representation of a supercar sound.

Man… where was this video when I first started, 15yrs ago.
Can you do a quick video on approach method charging?

It’s really good you got those gauge hoses with the valves, every gauge set should be like that. but I also get mine with a sight-glass, tells you more stuff what’s going on

excellent channel my friend ! this subcooling method is exactly the same progress at a fridge that use a txv expansion valve ? in commercial refrigerators apart from the required amperes drawn by the motor because most of the times I choose the pieces ( evaporator, condenser motor, etc )separately and join them and there is no other indication of filling with the correct amount of freon, for 20 years I have filled them in empirically without having any trouble not meaning that this is the right way !

So if my understanding is correct, the purpose of achieving the correct subcooling number is so that all of the phase change occurs Within the condenser and evaporator coils. This should lead to maximum efficiency.
