So if I rip 4K uhd blu rays to a synology nas and play it using a pc, Apple TV 4K and phone. Do I have to worry about transcoding? And will i worry about transcoding if I were to rip older disneys dvd tbat are 720p or 1080p

so basically if i watch 4K mkv files from a nas on a 4K tv, there is no transcoding happening, thus the attributes of the nas is negligible ?

We are living in 2022 now. The DS920+ haves transcoding. The DS923+ does not have transcoding.

But I am not a heavy watcher. Do I still need transcoding?

Thanks this is helpful. I have a question. I want to use transcoding through Davinci Resolve to edit H.265 in realtime. Does it work like this or is it only through PLEX that we get transcoding?

I'm able to play my 4k videos on all my devices via plex so I guess plex transcoding is not important for me? This means I can get any cheap NAS right? Sorry I'm super noob about NAS and plex transcode definition.

What if you just download 1080p from torrent and just wanna play it on your 1080p tv. No 4k no cellphones, no outside, don't unnecessarily make it complicated. I should be watching videos on budget HTPC?

love synology"s NAS, but it's true that plex cannot access the CPU hardware H264 or H265 decoders, and this sucks, and the lack of hdmi port is mind boggling, but i have 4 WD RED 8 To with the great SHR ( proprietary synology file format which is AWESOME ^^) and so i'm gonna stay on synology, cos i do not want to have to unload all these data to a bunch of smaller drives and start fresh.. i wish they could be a way like if i would switch to QNAP ... but the Os is important, and let's say i trust more DSM than an android based NAS.. thx for your videos.

If I will get WD my cloud will it be able to host a plex server if only device I use is fire stick and there is no transcoding anywhere when I check. I use plex app in fire stick ?
